Make 1 good trans from 2 bad?

My credo
Stop skipping steps and get it done right the first time.
So ive got a manual trans from a 1991 explorer sport 4.0 ohv v6. it has a broken case and sheared gears. my buddy has a manual trans from 2004 ranger xlt SOHC V6.

Are they compatible parts donors for eachother?
the finished trans would be going back in the 2004 XLT
Thank in advance.

Have to inventory what's good.

The ratios are slightly different as the sohc 4.0 got a different first gear ratio.

What is wrong with the buddy's trans?

If they are the same model transmission, the guts should be the same. Like bobby said. You will need to see what all is good and see if there is enough good parts to make a functional transmission.

Trying to figure out the "trick" in this trick question??????

The 1991 trans has broken case and bad gears.................so basically nothing to offer but the gear shift knob, lol

2004 4.0l trans has no mention of any damage??

Going into a 2004 Range but no mention of engine size......................so that may be the trick part

I am totally confused :)

Thanks RonD, head scratcher eh

Sorry. I guess that i could have offered more information. I had a lot going on when my buddy called me, so i hadn't really thought it through.

I dont know what is wrong with the 2004 trans, officially.... He said he was driving down the freeway and lost all gears but fourth. after walking him through some easy things( like shift forks and related parts) and asking a handful of questions, I am assuming that hes got a problem on the counter shaft.

my blown up transmission does have a few good gears, mostly on the counter shaft.

so there isnt really any trick in my question... because the question was "are the guts from trans A compatible with trans B?". Although i do appreciate that more info is always needed when someone asks a rather vague far off question.and i really appreciate that every is anticipating all the issues one might have.

When all gears except 4th don't work then the input shaft gear is stripped, and the counter shaft gear as well

4th doesn't use a "gear", its 1:1 ratio so input shaft is connected directly to output shaft, no ratio(gear) change is needed
Requires full rebuild to repair and quite a few of the more expensive parts
Not at all a common failure, but a known failure on any Manual trans

Gear in upper left is input shaft, lower left is counter shaft: http://www.nationalnewstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/leah-schoenfeld-10b.jpg
Stripped of course, other gears can be on good condition
The issue is that those metal bits were being ground off for a while before total failure, so all the bearings should be replaced, and some of the "good gears" may have some unseen wear, so need to look closely
Counter shaft is one piece so needs to be replaced
If the 1991 also had gear issues then same contamination may exist

T5 input shaft gear seen here, so manual trans issue but not common, just known: https://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/attachments/image-jpeg.587378/

Are parts interchangeable?
most are, but simple enough to just look up input shaft replacement and see what years that part is compatible with, and counter shaft, counter shaft must match ratios of main gears of course
And look up full rebuild kit and see if it includes 1991 to 2004 model years

In my opinion looking for a used M5R1 would be best, needs to be from a 4.0l 4x4, 2001-2011 Ranger or B4000
Needs the OSS sensor so has to be 2001-2011

If anything is wrong with the countershaft then the whole thing is junk. It's one piece.

Personally I think even if you do have good parts in your '91 trans, they will not be usable for a 2004. They are both M5ODs but there were enough changes made in the late 90's and again in or around '01 and then again sometime afterwards, that the likelyhood of parts being an exact fit will not be very high. You would have to disassemble both, compare each piece and see which ones will work.

thats kind of what i think. but the friend is in a real bind at the moment.... so if that what it takes to get my friend up and running again, thats what ill do.

That's what I would be doing too, I'm just saying that you should expect to use none of the parts from your '91 and be pleasantly surprised if you can.

FWIW you can buy input/countershaft kits on eBay for a reasonable price. Probably from RockAuto as well. The problem with the '04 trans is that it probably has a 2 piece synchro somewhere, the rebuild kits are stupid expensive, and very hard to find. Plus whatever other internals are trashed, can almost guarantee some will be.

Tear it down, post pics and keep us updated :icon_thumby:

I would check at car-part.com

For a used transmission for the 2004 4.0l 2wd(if that's what it is) in your area(zipcode)
That will give you a price point to see if partial rebuild cost is worth while, vs. used

Used M5R1 is not a big gamble

In Utah SLC(84105) I see $350 to $650 as average price

yeah we have kind of explored those options....
just was trying to get off cheap. wasnt an issue that needed to be rushed until yesterday. apparently it is a code violation to have a non working vehicle in your driveway for more than 24 hours. the elderly people he rents a basement from got cited for it and a fine, and are now kicking him out because of it. he offered an apology and to pay the fine, but apparently they still werent happy....or atleast thats the story I got.. yo know how that goes.

as far as what matches.....
should be looking at any ford/mazda truck 2001 to 2011, right? any other possible donors?

Although rare 2001-2003 Explorer Sport with 4.0l SOHC had the M5R1s as an option
And that's pretty much it for the M5R1s that have the needed OSS sensor

2001–2003 Ford Explorer Sport (4.0 L SOHC V6 engine)
2001–2011 Ford Ranger (4.0 L SOHC V6 engine)
2001-2010 Mazda B4000 (4.0 L SOHC V6 engine)
