So a 20 minute job, replace my broken thermostat. So now big deal at all, right? Until a bolt shears off in the block...previous owner had put a cheap POS bolt in there and it sheared. Crap. So tried an easy out, and guess what happened, it broke off in there:bawling:. Just kept breaking bits trying to drill it out. Finally called a bolt removal specialist to help, paid him 150 to get the darn thing out and put a helicoil in there...but had to rip the whole front of the engine off for him to get to it:(. Crazy. Why is nothing simple anymore?

A jillion yrs ago I ruined a head by shearing an EZ out. I am 1 for 3 with EZ outs. I drill sheared bolts now . When you drill out the center of a stud, it relieves the pressure on the threads. When you tighten up an EZ out in the hole ,you are jamming against the threads. Doesn't make sense. Drilling is slow, so to make it faster, I start with a 1/8 th pilot hole and work my way up by 1/8s. 8mm is about 5/16 so you want the final diameter at least a 32 under size. Sharp bits and oil. I use a small screw driver to pry the remains off the threads. Most times ,i dont need to use any thing but a new bolt to chase the threads. :D

It did suck. Yea, that makes sense...that's a good idea. Those EZ outs suck!!!! I used my sharpest bits, but it didn't want to drill the bolt out. The specialist used carbide bits, maybe I should get some so I don't have to call him again!

EZ outs are hardened and quite brittle. Regular drill bits won't touch them. I agree with AndyD and if you have an industrial supply place or bolt supply place they will have left hand drill bits. I've heard that the left over bolt will sometimes unscrew itself using left handed drill bits.

same thing happened when i was working on my b2 this last summer i was pulling it off and 2 bolts broke i was lucky and part of the bolt was sticking out the heads just sheered off
so i borrowed a welder from an institute of learning i attended in my former years tacked some nuts on and then quick cooled em with wd40 (cause its water based and all i had plus i was told that super hot metal will pull cold liquid in to the threads (might be a lie but hey i said **** it)) and then put a wrench in and wiggled em back and forth till i could do a full rotation with out stopping and just steadily backed em out and then just replaced em with some hardware either stainless or zinc pretty sure i went stainless so they wouldn't break again and it worked

ouch... man that sucks. at $150 bucks labor i would seriously look into a junkyard intake and say Fornicate it...
