So ive been reading through things and trying to figure out the best way to help my 89 BII out once i get my 2.9 put together and in, to run a little better with the engine work ive done to it. I was reading up on the MAF conversion and i got to thinking, a 2.9 and a 4.0 intake are routed almost the same exact way, as well as the air intake hoses. Would it be possible to use the intake tube, airbox, and MAF from a early 4.0, along with the plug pigtail, and make the conversion using the 90 BII California PCM as outlined in the tech library? ALSO on a side note, does anyone know if a 4.0 PCM is pinned close to the same as a 2.9 and could it be used in place of the California PCM to run my reworked 2.9 with the MAF? Just thinking some here to try and figure something out and maybe get this thing running well on the cheap. Any help would be appreciated, FWM.

If you want to get it running well cheaply, don't modify it.

The MAF conversion is only very slightly better than the stock speed density. If you modify it from its design, it will NOT be better. What the MAF does that speed density doesn't is account for modest to moderate forced air. Not at all something cheap to do.

Im not real familiar with the speed density system, more so with MAF. With the bore increase (however minimal in actual displacement increase) and the port work done to the intakes and heads, still be in the range of compensation of the speed density system? Its already modified, and has been done so with only the expense of the rebuild kit, and crank kit. The question still stands, can a 91 4.0 MAF sensor and intake tube be used with the Cali PCM to complete the conversion? The only major problem is the tech library uses a 3 prong sensor, the 91 4.0 sensor i have is a 4 prong.
