Needed new tires. Old ones had dry rot. Also wanted to go to 15" rather than the 14" that were on it. You just can't find much in the way of 14" tires any more. Found a set of 15" wheels with tires in fair shape at a really good price. Ugly old steel wheels but it did solve my problem.

of course it did create a new one:

Speedo now reads high. Guess that may be a good thing as it may avoid getting stopped by our blue brothers.

What do you think? Guess the 15"ers do look better as they fill the wheel wells more.

The speedo would read lower than actual speed with bigger tires.... IF the ranger was accurate from the factory. However, the speedos on those trucks won't read actual speed unless it's a 30" tire.

Rangers typically read about 2 mph fast from the factory. The only ones that I know of being correct, at least on the later generations, were the ones that had 30” diameter tires.

My Ranger with 31” tires reads about 3 mph slow now. So, have to drive the speed limit as far as the speedometer goes so as to stay in the typical 5 mph window the police gives you.

Pfffft to calibrate the speedo just drive as fast as you can and the nice police man will tell you exactly how fast you were going. Adjust accordingly. Police are always there to help.

That certainly is a way to go...

When the angry man in uniform comes to your window just hand him a calculator and a notebook full of complicated mathematical formulas for determining speed vs gearing vs tire size vs engine rpm and say "I can't figure this out can you?"

You'll get off with a warning guaranteed...

Can I get lawyer goat to sign off on this plan?

Saying they aren't accurate unless they have 30" tires is too vague... and on a 4x4 is probably close, but not on a 4x2... my '97 reads right with 27" tires, whatever I'm running now is about 7% slow, 235 75 15's it is 10% slow. My '00 Explorer is still a little slow with 31" tires but it's really close.

My 2010 2wd wasn't accurate until I put 30s on it. "Verified" using GPS and the blinking "your speed" signs the police move around every few weeks. Mabey the year difference has something to do with it?

GPS speed is less accurate than the speedometer is to begin with...

Whilst trying to figure out what size tire I wanted to end up with after re-gearing the old truck is when I first read about the speedo's not being accurate.

I did a before and after "test" using whatever the most downloaded GPS app was and between the app, the speedo, and those "your speed" signs.. it was definitely close enough for govt. work.

GPS is always as the crow flies. So it will always be showing slower unless the road is perfectly flat (impossible) with a lock on a good number of satellites. For example if you were doing 100mph up or down a 45 degree incline (insane but...) It would show you doing 50mph.

When they switched from cable to VSS they became more accurate. Since it was a programmed pulse signal not a gear in the transmission controlling the speed reading. My 2009 is maybe 1 or 2 mph over at 70mph but that's because if it read slower people could sue Ford for every speeding ticket since the vehicle was saying they were going slower than the speed limit when they got a ticket.

Good info

We hug in my basement now?

Be there in 10 hours. Fire up the furnace, I had food from 7-11 for lunch. Hopefully I can make it that long.
