M5R2 to '78 351w


Just 1st on a np435 isn't synchronized but you wouldn't be using it much with it being 6.69:1? Some where in there, and have you thought about a tko or t5? Being 2wd zf5 are nice but shifts like a semi
 
Both the M5R2 and ZF when used behind the 351w will use the same flywheel (164 tooth, 28oz imbalance... Not just any SBF w/ a M5OD as stated above. The 4.9 and 5.0 flywheels are the wrong imbalance.), starter, clutch, and master cyl. Get the M5 and use that until you find a reasonably priced ZF.
 
I've got the M5ODR2 behind my 5.0 and although I haven't put a lot of miles on it yet I am pleased with the way it is working.
 
1981 and older 5.0 and 351w use 28oz
 
BTW i have no idea of the gearing in the old 9'' ford rear. might try to look it up with the vin or something. I also see a Toploader being a good option, found a few cheap ones not far on CL.

a T5 and TKO seem to be out of the price range, horded by mustang fanboys haha I'm trying to find something under $500 and i don't mind too much if it shifts like a semi, i like that feel. i also work on semi's so i'm kinda used to it lol
 
All I have to say is check craigslist every 5 minutes lol, I picked up my zf5 4x4 for 125$ but bought 3 other trannies in the mean time trying to find it
 
yeah, i suppose thats the way to do it. although i probably wont be buying 3 trannies before i get the right one lol, i dont have that kind of cash. both my trucks are money pits and the 3rd one the daily driver seems to need something but i ignore it lol
 
I got lucky some how and broke even after selling all of them and I kept a NP 205 off of one
 
i only need 2wd lol. it would make a terrible mud truck, it got stuck on wet grass haha.

idk if it would be easier or hard to find a 2wd trans
 
5.8 ZF5's are going to be tougher to find in the grand scheme of things. They are also huge to fit in something smaller than what they came in originally.

Ford did put the M5OD behind the 5.8 in the '250's so that should tell you something.

They are stronger than the T5, the T5 has a mixed reputation in a 2k sports car. Ford opted for the M5OD (with different ratios) for the Supercoupes running a 3.8 with a blower.

People jack up their 1/2 ton+ 4x4s, beat the crap out of them and then have M5OD problems... same as any other trans.

You are not going to race it, you are not going to tow with it and you are not going to mud bog with it, I think you would be fine with an M5OD.

We just got a '96 F-250 with a ZF5, we liked the ratios of the T18 in the '80 F-350 better that it replaced... and with 100k more miles (200k vs 300k) it didn't need syncros replaced in second. (The T18 didn't have a synchronized first when it was new so the syncros also being out of first in the ZF is kind of a draw)

Out of all the transmission I've seen and tore apart the m5od was the easiest to rebuild, had to do one in college and it took 3 hours

Not too bad for a rebuilt transmission.

I deal with tractor parts, you can spend that much on one gear or bearing.
