Hello,

My Mazda 5 speed in my Ranger is acting up (again), it is falling out of first and second gear when moving, when i have it jacked up, and the engine running, the tire spins in neutral with the clutch in or out. It is extremely difficult to shift into a gear. I yanked it out again tonight, and took off the top plate off, when everything is in neutral, and I turn the input, the rear output turns with it. Everything looks good inside, I found a small amount of shrapnel on the plug but nothing major. The syncros look good, no missing teeth on them. I'm just wondering where to go from here. Is it a clutch issue? The pressure plate looks good as does the disc. The slave is new. Is the master done? I'm just fishing to see if anyone has experienced anything like this to give me a direction to look for issues.

thanks in advance

check the shift forks-the plastic tabs wear away and the forks themselves wear till the gear won't fully engage.common problem on these trannys.

Plastic tabs?

Please tell me what the hell you are talking about...

Do the forks wear? Yeah, usually as a result of driving around with your hand resting on the shifter....

But the only plastic in a Mazda trans (other than a few oil direction devices)
are the shift lever pivot bushings which are responsible for most of the shift quality issues people experience.

BTW, it's the TRANSFER CASES used in rangers that have plastic tabs on the Shift forks.

you're right-the m5 doesn't have the plastic tabs-but the shift forks are prone to excessive wear....i've had to replace these on several m5od's.and,yes,it would be from driving while resting your hand on the shifter.the plastic tabs i was thinking of were the ones in the t-case;when they wear out you get similar problems-incomplete engagement.

When you have your truck jacked up and wheels rolling its gonna fall outta gear, mine always did that as did all my mustangs, but when its in proper driving mode( being on the pavement) and you put torque on the motor IE disengaging the clutch, THen it will almost pul the shifter back into place, I dont know what to call it, btu it the nature of the 5 spd.

I've only seen half a dozen bad forks in the last decade.
Almost always the 3-4 fork on the 4th gear side.

ONE was worn on the 2nd gear side of the 1-2 fork.

Forks are NOT usually a problem in the Mazda trans
So I disagree that they are "prone" to excessive wear.

If you can't turn the input shaft separate of the output shaft when everything is in neutral there is a little needle bearing that is in the input shaft that the main shaft slides into that might be hung up.

does the M5 have a 4th gear like the TK5 does where it couples the input and output shafts together rather than using an actual gearset?

there might be some kind of bindup between the two causing it to turn the back wheels when not in any gear.

Now mine falls out of 3rd and 5th, but only at very specific speeds. I'm just hitting the sweet spot, and my hand has to be on the shifter.

Is yours falling out by itself, or is it doing that?

Mine is doing exactly that, falling out on it's own, but in 1st and 2nd. It has to be held in place in order to stay in that gear. When it does fall out, it makes a grinding noise as if it is between the gear and neutral.

How do the forks look?

Forks look good, minor wear, but the part i don't get is when I spin the input the output turns with it while everything is in neutral. If it is the input needle bearing, can I pop the input out without dismantling the rest? Or should I go through the rest? The Syncros even all check out.

Turns out 3rd gear was trashed, shrapnel from the welded gear went into the main shaft / counter shaft bearings making a hell of a mess, all good now, but sometimes it still falls out of first gear. any ideas? obviously not the syncros, shift fork maybe? or detent in the shift rails? Thanks
