M5R1 detents

I have a Duratec 2.3 and M5R1 that I am installing into a small car. I am using a rather short gear shifter and the detents seem to be way to strong. I have removed the cover and as might be expected, find that nothing is obvious. Before tearing into the shift rails, I'd like some input.

Where are the detents located? What would be the best way to weaken them? What is the best way to disassemble the rails? Is weakening the detents even recommended? I see that some are using rather short aftermarket shifters, are strong detents a problem?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks
Bill

The "detents" are both built into the shifter top cover, and also comprise the interlock that prevents the disasterous engagement of two gears silmultaneously
(In short don't phark with them or you'll deeply regret it) and on the synchro hubs/collars themselves.

I wouldn't mess with those because that would lead to rapid shift fork wear
and since the forks are aluminum "rapid" can have a rather dire meaning.

What "short" shifter are you using?

If you get one of the Hurst billet plus shifters you can bolt virtually
any Hurst shift lever onto it.

I am using the stock ball/selector (can't find the correct nomenclature) that is cut off and with a home made remote selector mounted on it. It moves the shifter back 6". I have a home made shifter, 11" long, attached to the remote. I can post a photo if desired.

Aside from the different shifters that are available (I'm happy with mine), what is the advantage of the Hurst unit? My setup feels very notchy, but that does not bother me as much as the effort required to shift. It certainly does not slide in and out of gear.

Hurst shift reduces the amount of travel needed to put the trans in gear thus allowing for quicker shifts.

I attached a diagram with measurements. It will knock off over an inch of travel from every shift.

The 1-2 throw on my shifter is 3.25". Are the strong detents bothersome with the Hurst, or is it just me?

Could you please? I'm trying to get some ideas on how to build one.
