can anyone tell me what vehicle the M5ODr1 transmission comes from, so i can get to looking for one to replace the a4ld

Check the Tech Library under manual transmissions. They came out in most RBV's from 90 on. Be aware that the ones from 4 cylinders and 3.0's will NOT fit a 2.9 or 4.0.
You are going to need a list of parts to make the swap, 2wd will be easier on the pocket than 4wd, but it is well worth the time, effort and money.

I just swapped over to the M5 from a different Manual. Going from A4LD is actually easier in some ways, harder it others. Wires are tricky, trans cross member is already in the right spot.

best swap i ever did on my b2. not really an easy job tho. lol.

You will be looking for a 89+ RBV with a manual. The 98+ 2wd M50D doesnt have provisions for the speed sensor in the tail housing though, and the newer (not sure what year) 4x4 trannies dont have the provisions for a manual tcase shifter, but its easy to swap tail housings.

EDIT: 2.3 and 2.5 trannies are interchangeable
2.9 and 4.0 trannies are interchangeable
3.0 trannies are the queer ones

The only permanent fix for the A4LD is upgrading to a better transmission. I was told that you want an M5ODr1 from a 2.9L..... it has a better first gear... but an Explorer with a 5spd is sure to have an M5ODr1. They came in about 40% of 4 door Explorers from 91 - 94 (the only years I was ever concerned with) and about 55% of Explorer Sports (2dr)....

there used to be a kit for upgrading the RBV transmission to a transmission from a full size but I cannot seem to find the link anymore ........ it adapted your V6 so it could run a small block transmission.

The 2.9,2.5,2.3,and 3.0 are all geared the same. The 4.0 M50d is geared a bit higher in 1,3 and three. The 98+ M50D's have improved syncros with a lining on them.

heres a link that has all the ratios and such. http://therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?p=610954&posted=1#post610954

It wasn't that hard when I did it, you just need to know what parts you need ahead of time.
