Does anyone know how much strength difference there is between the M5OD and FM146? I'm having trouble shifting the M5OD in my 92 4X4, and can't find a replacement in my local U-pull it yards, but there are several FM146's. I had a 146 in my bronco and never had any trouble with it. That was behind a 2.8 and a 2.3 though. Thanks

from what i have been told you would be fine putting it behind a 2.9 or 2.3 but you would grenade a fm145 or 146 if you put it behind a 4.0 hope this helps

What motor do you have? All 4 cyl M50D's are interchangeable (when I say all I am assuming you know a 4x2 and 4x4 are not interchangeable with out swapping tail housings and shafts). And the 2.9 and 4.0 M50D's are interchangeable, the only odd ball is the 3.0. The only changes the M50D has seen since 88 were in 98. They lost previsions for the VSS in the tail housing (but the shaft still has the previsions for the gear, so the housing can be swapped from an older trans) and the shifter was reconfigured, but it is still interchangeable with the older ones.

You would be better off puting the M50D back in. IMO it is a "bullet proof" trans behind any stock RBV motor.

Yep. The FM146 is definitely a downgrade from the M5OD. Unless you have a 4wd 4cyl, a replacement Mazda trans shouldn't be that hard to find.

True, but chances are he wont find a Duratec Ranger in the JY.

Are you sure they have different bolt patterns? I was pretty sure that hadn't changed.

About 90% sure they're different. Duratecs have been around about 8 years now, there's probably plenty of them in junkyards.

Thats what I thought. I am pretty sure they are the same, but I have never had a duratec and a lima trans side by side.

I have. The bell housing bolt patterns are about as different as could be imagined. Start off with ten bolts in a circular pattern. By that, I mean bolts all the way around and no bolts high on the block. Add to that a totally different starter mount.
