Ok, I've been researching this and I *think* this will work, but I am getting some conflicting accounts in various places so I thought I'd ask you guys for validation.
The input shaft bearing on my Ranger is rattling potentially due to low fluid when I got it (it had a bad fluid leak), so my plan is to get a good core and do a rebuild and keep it as a shelf spare for when the time comes to do a clutch or if it fails before then. This will give me plenty of time to do it right etc.
I found a (supposedly) good core, but it is a slightly different configuration than mine. The used core I want to rebuild is from a 2003 4.0, 2WD.

The one with the tail shaft housing is a 1993 4.0, 2WD, extended cab with 6ft bed. The transmission is bad, but I need the tail shaft housing due to the good core is setup for VSS for the speedo.
So my plan is to get the 2003 trans, rebuild it, and get the tail shaft housing off of the 93

My truck: 1994 XLT 2.3L 5 speed with 7ft bed 2DW
Transmission core: 2003 Ranger 2WD 2.3L (I know nothing else about the truck it came out of)
Tail shaft truck: 1993 4.0, 2WD, extended cab with 6ft bed (transmission is bad and I don't trust it for a rebuild core)

So will this 93 tail shaft housing fit on the 2003 trans so i can convert it to the speedo cable drive system for my 94? Or are there other differences that I am missing for this Frankenstein idea?

You have 3 different bellhousings on your transmissions:
Yours is 2.3 Lima 2WD - with speedo plug
The '03 is 2.3 Duratec 2WD - without speedo plug (yes, Ford has 2 completely different 2.3s)
The '93 is 4.0 Cologne 2WD - with speedo plug
You would be able to move the '93 or the '03 tail housing/tail shaft to your transmission (but moving trail shaft requires significant disassembly).
Note: I want to double check the '93 tail shaft...I can't remember if the output gear is integral or not.

ok wait I see a red flag. I did not know the 2003 2.3 was a duratec, i thought those were a 2.5l or something. if thats the case, this bell housing from the 2003 will not bolt up to my 94 2.3, is this correct?

You are correct.

That is correct, you need a '88-01 transmission from a 4 cylinder Ranger and the '01 is a split year as the '98 to early '01 were a 2.5L version of the Lima then it went to a Duratec 2.3L mid year. In '98 is when the speed sensor went away I believe

Well, thanks for the feedback fellas, I just about made a mistake there. I appreciate the feedback. I just had it stuck in my head that Duratec were all 2.5L.
Now back to trying to find a usable core in my general area
