I replaced a Mitsu transmission with a Mazda in my 90 Bronco II. The problem is when I installed it I didn't have it in neutral, so I couldn't get the input shaft lined up. I slid the shifter back in so that I could rotate the input shaft and I was able to bolt up the trans. I then bolted everything together and raised the trans up to the floor and it appears that the shifter was jammed. I had to loosen the top cover (while the trans was still installed) to get the shifter out. I can get the shifter back in, but it appears it's stuck in 4th. Looking down at the rails, it appears the middle one is too far forward. I've tried everything I can (using big screwdrivers, brute force, etc.) to get the middle rail to move.
Anybody have any suggestions on how to get the thing lined up that doesn't involve removing the driveshafts, t-case and transmission?
