Im pretty sure i have a M5OD-R1 but not sure, the rag reads E87A EF. I looked at the fluid and it looked like gear oil but the owners manual says it takes ATF? What should I fill it with?

The fluid inside looked yellow.

Its a 1989 ford ranger xlt 2.3l 2x4

The mazda trans is the ONLY manual trans for the 2.3, 3.0 and 4.0 engines from 1988-up.

the 1988-92 Mitsubishi transmission was used ONLY on the 2.9 engine.

fill it with Mercon V. if gear oil was in there, it will need to be flushed acouple of times before you fill it for good.

is there any other fluid that the previous owner could of used to to cause the fluid to be yellow? i read sometimes you can use like 0w30 motor oil.

is there any other fluid that could be used in this tranny other than ATF? im just curious.

Mercon-V is NOT recommended for Mazda transmission made before 1998.

im just getting mercon. but i just didnt want to dump it in the tranny seeing how the fluid looks a lot and smells a lot like gear oil.

The truck isnt slipping or anything it just grinds SOMETIMES going into 2nd and 3rd.

It doesnt grind if u double clutch or downshift or sometimes it doesnt grind at all

the sound is more of a like grind going into gear not like a long one.
