M5OD output shafts, 2wd vs 4wd

are the output shafts a different spline count and length or are the transmissions the same other than the tailhousing? if they are different how hard is it to swap the output shafts? I've got a 4wd one and would like to put it in a 2wd truck.

Ill know next weekend, I am swapping guts from a 2wd into a 4x4 case. Swapping the tail shaft involves completly tearing down the tranny. I just finished doing that about 30 min ago. I wont be able to compare the 2wd shaft and 4x4 shaft side by side until Friday, I will be sure to post pics if there is any difference. I believe they are the same though, they just have different housings to accommodate either the tcase or slip yoke shaft.

Dunno about splines but they are a different length, you either need to swap trannys or swap the the main shaft/tail housing.

I figured I had to swap the shaft. How much of a pain is it to swap the output shaft out in one of these transmissions?

It involes total disassembly. In the tech library AlleD has a write up on how to disassemble a M50D.

The output shaft is shorter AND a smaller spline on the 4x4 trans.
