I called Ford and they said this tranny can use both ATF and gear oil. does one have an advantage over the other? I hear good things about GM Synchromesh but its damn expensive.

Your ford guy screwed up. People have put gear oil in M5ODs before with bad results. They take ATF. Some say that 0w30 oil also works. I have not tried it.

Gear oil is too thick. The idea behind the 0w30 is that it is the same viscosity of atf.

awesome, that just saved me a lot of money haha. I drained it and it was super dark but still had the red tint to it. looks like it was a good time to change it.

Yep, Mercon ATF (be sure to use actual Mercon-spec fluid, not Mercon V, otherwise the shift quality will degrade. It's not completely compatible, despite the stupid games Ford has been playing with these fluids recently)

ive been running the pennzoil syncromesh fluid for almost a year now. its no worse money-wise than mobil-1 synthetic atf. its worked well for me. never ever run a gear oil in it though. its almost as bad as running nothing at all in the transmission. the final result will be the same, you'll need another transmission.

I'm running 5-20w Pennzoil motor oil with a half quart of Lucas in mine and have'nt had any problems with it. It does'nt leak a drop and shifts pretty smooth as well.

mazda guys used to put 1/2 atf and 1/2 80w90 for years i have seen it, ford guys seem to use 80w90

That's scary that the person you talked to at your Ford dealership said the M5R1 could take gear oil. Just wow.

Mercon ATF is the proper oil for the M5OD. I had to run Mercon V for a little bit in a pinch, and I didn't notice any differenced in shift quality. However, many people have noticed degraded performance with Mercon V. I suppose it depends on how new the transmission is.

Mercon/Dexron III is still available and always will be. It's just labeled differently due to Ford's ownership of the Mercon label.

Yeah, its now Dex/Merc. Same stuff; different name. You would not believe the trouble this name change has caused counter guys like myself. I have to prove it at least twice a week to a customer that it hasn't changed.
