I ordered a shifter repair kit off ebay, and it didnt come with an instruction sheet (go figure). Seen here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ebayphotohosting

I have the shiny metal ring sitting on the bottom, one of the rubber bushings with the groove for the pins, then the pins (I made note that the pin on the left seems to not want to be in place all the where where it should be, and tapped on it with a punch and hammer. It still doesnt want to move, and the metal on the pin has an engraving from the punch. May have to adjust later) then another one of the rubber bushings, then there is the plate that is supposed to cover all of that with the rubber seal, which I cant get off the shifting ball.

I found this thread on TRS, but it didnt help a whole lot. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3433

Any thoughts on how to get that threaded bolt thing out of there?

Ive had to pull the top rubber bushing out because no matter what I do, the shifter does not want to move out of neutral into another gear. I took the top one out, and it seems to be working fine. The left pin seems to need some really hard tapping, and even then, it wont go through all the way like the one on the right. I think its because of the angle, but there might be some pitting inside that little slot. After test driving, there is no longer any play in any gear, and it sits firmly. Feels GREAT

I cant get the new plate on still though, but after this I have first and fifth gears again which was the primary reason, now to get rid of that pesky fluid leak with the top seals and the plate.

I used the kit with both washers and both bushings, but my pins were in ok shape so I re-used them. Not sure why yours wouldn't work that way.

I had trouble getting the pins back in mine when I did it. I put them in a pair of vise grips and cleaned them up on a wire wheel on my bench grinder, they went back in snug after that. I also used everything in the kit, both bushings and the metal washer. No problems and everything feels great.

That write up on the bushings was great, however I didnt get that exact kit. No matter, it does function quite well. One thing on the write-up I would change is that its a 17mm or 11/16 wrench, not 19mm to take off the nut/washer combo on the shifter stick. It should also be noted that the pins are not available at any dealership, part store, or otherwise with the exception of a repair kit.

That write up also explained how the top bushing goes on, which is by taking the top part of the shifter stick out by tightening the nut on the opposide side of the thread. Thanks for your help guys. :icon_thumby::icon_twisted:

Talus, you issue is likely that you have a '94-up "long" shift "finger"
in an '88-94 "short tower" top cover.

And yeah that combination of parts will lockup if you don't make room "somewhere"

are the top covers interchangeable on different years of M5OD as long as the correct shifter is used with it?
