So here's the backstory. I've got a 92 4.0 4x4, with a bad bearing somewhere in my M50D. I think its on the input shaft somewhere, as the sound is related to engine speed, not road speed, and exists sitting in neutral. However that's neither here nor there, I KNOW the transmission is on borrowed time.

I gather that the M50D-R1HD was available after the introduction of the SOHC 4.0. My question is whether the newer, M50D-R1HD will bolt up to my OHV 4.0? Will it bolt up to the BW 1354 transfer case? Would I encounter any problems if I did the swap? If everything turns out to work, is it worth the swap, or should I just find a regular old M50D?

M50d

I've read on here that the heavy duty will replace the regular duty one hole on the bell housing is an extra hole. But he also said finding one is as likely as finding a gold kugarand under the seat.

Well I dont know about the block bolt pattern for the bell housing, but all rangers, BII, explorer t-cases mount the same...

on a better note if the bearing is still making noise in neutral and its tied to engine rpm, it could be a bad throw out bearing and or bent clutch spring on the preasure plate.

id get one! i used to have a hd in my but mine went out and when i had it replace, it wasnt replaced with the hd but rather the regular m5od. i could tell the difference in 1st gear. the hd is lower geared.

Yes. Direct swap....one spare hole that the SOHC uses but the OHV doesn't. Just make sure it's out of a 4x4. So your Tcase would bolt up to it.

HD isn't geared any deeper, but a 3.0L or smaller engined tranny has lower ratios 1st-3rd gear.

GEAR RATIO CHART

Speaking of that chart....

Someone needs to update it. Ford changed the (at least) 4.0L M5's ratios in about the '03 model year. Or so I read from sources which I trust the info(Bob Rwenzing). I've got a 06 trans and when I put it in, I noticed an immediate different in ratios compared to my '01 trans. And when the '01 went back in last week, I noticed the difference again.

If someone can tell me how to figure out transmission gear ratios with having the trans on the ground, I have no problem popping off the shift rails and counting.

put it in the gear you want to count and then make marks at the 12 position on the input and output shafts then spin the input shaft once and count how many times the output went around. that is your ratio. so say the out put goes from 12 to 3 then your ratio is 1:25

Just my luck..... I will try and get some more info on the subject, gotta go bug my dealer mech buddy and see what he can find out.

I looked through the transmission manuals and there is no mention of the gear ratio's of any of the transmissions.

Hmmm.....time to tear into my spares, trevor's too....
