'07 2.3l M50D w/ ~145K on it, synthetic tranny fluid changed ever 30-40K miles.

Front tranny seal starting dripping, I thought it was time to do the rear main oil seal, clutch disc, pressure plate, flywheel, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, and front and rear tranny seals while it was out.

Found what seems like a professional shop, when I got it back it didn't want to shift into 1st and sometimes reverse. The clutch pedal feel told me it wasn't bled properly, so I took it back and explained.

The shop rebled it and called to tell me it was still hard to shift into 1st and sometimes reverse, and they'd replaced the new fluid w/o good results. They were nice enough to put it back on the lift and let me confirm the throwout bearing travel and ascertain that the disc was free with the clutch pedal depressed. The pedal felt much tighter after their rebleed.

They suspected the synchros. It was hard to shift into gear with pedal depressed and engine off, so that seemed a reasonable assumption.

The problem is, I'd never had any shifting problems previously. And now I have a slight whine from the tranny, never there before. Aside from the long shot of them dropping the tranny on it's input shaft, (they seem honest and sincere) I'm at a loss to understand the problem. Any help, hints, or mockery welcome!

What lube did they put back in it?

Mercon V, they told me, I assume, a bulk shop equivalent.

Long and complicated story.

When I got my truck back from the shop, they'd replaced the flywheel, clutch, slave cylinder, rear main oil seal, front and rear tranny seal. Then I had the problem in the OP.
Shortly afterwards I noticed the rear main seal leaking, so I took it back and they offered a used tranny w/ 73k miles for $1491, no labor as they'd have to pull the tranny to fix the rear main seal anyway. I accepted (time crunch) and told them to charge me the core ($150) and put my original tranny in the bed of the truck.

"New" tranny was fine. I started tearing down the M5OD and when I got the front bearing cover off I saw the problem.

There are two fluid galleys from the inner case into the front bearing cover that feed fluid to the front input and countershaft bearings.

The mech who replaced the front tranny seal had gone RTV happy and filled those passages with RTV, starving those bearings. The front input bearing and race were trashed.

I took pictures of the plugged up galleys, and the front bearing cover to the shop and showed the manager what had happened. He agreed with the diagnosis.

I told him I'd be happy with an $800 refund, but he insisted on refunding me both the cost of the used tranny, and the core for it ($1641) , apologized, and told me to keep the used tranny.

I'm really glad I had the experience to find the problem. If not I'd be S.O.L.

It's really nice to see good ethics and a shop who takes responsibility for their mistakes.

Shit happens, I'm glad they took your word. You showed them pictures, but in todays world that doesn't seem to be enough. Even high dollar shops do the tail light warranty. This shop seems to need have a good review done on them! It really seems they went the extra mile to make it right.

..mockery welcome!
