PO "rebuilt the transmission" (lord knows what that means based on the other things I found) so when I pulled the bolts some were missing and there where two sized short (~2.5") and long (~4'). Is this normal and if so which go where?

Im pretty sure there is three short ones for the starter and the rest are the 4' ones. i just just pulled mine the other day

As it happens, I'm looking at the same issue with my '89. Kinda startling to be pulling the tranny for a clutch and find only four bolts, two of which I could loosen by hand.

I just happen to remember a diagram on-screen at the Ford Parts dep't. It was for the 4.0, rather than the 2.9, which mine has. What stuck out was the fact that there were two part numbers for the bolts; at least one (from the upper part of the bell housing) was much longer than the others. I don't know if the '94 is different, but it seems worth checking out.

The two bolts that run through the block dowels on a 2.9 and 4.0 are longer than the others.

The two that go from the bellhousing to the oil pan on a 4.0 are also kinda long.

It's NORMAL for them to be different lengths
