So what are the options for someone who would want more gearing out of a thus far stock Ranger 4.0? TC ratio is 2.48 to 1 or something like that. I'd rather up that to 4 to 1.
Can I re-gear the TC? Change it altogether? Doubler?
Which makes the most sense? Easiest? Most reliable?
You have a few options. Regearing the case is not one of them.
1. Build a doubler. This will give you about a 6:1 reduction. Pros: Great reduction, many gearing options, good highway RPM, can be done for cheap. Cons: Lots of work, need to change driveshaft lengths
2. Regear axles. Pros: No fab work, decent reduction. Cons: Expensive, bad highway RPM if you go too low.
3. Swap a regeared Dana 300 in. Pros: Stronger case, allows for twin stick, decent gearing. Cons: Requires expensive flip kit and adapter
4. Atlas. Pros: Strong, good reduction, good gearing options. Cons: Expensive
5. 302 swap with NP435 tranny. Pros: V8 power, excellent reduction, very strong. Cons: No overdrive makes for lousey highway driving, swap can be expensive and will require a lot of fab work.
