so who else has back pain? the kind that is sharp and unpredictable and that will take you to the ground...

i have disc problems in my lower back that are currently stopping almost stopping me from walking.

but i can't afford to miss work so i've been suffering the last few days, i work as a mechanic and it hurts SO bad that i can't even pick up my impact gun off the bench without having to brace myself.

i can't even bend down to pick something up without climbing with my arms.

the only thing that relieves the pain is walking over to the bench and picking the weight off my legs with my arms.

i almost collapsed several times just from walking.

anybody have any suggestions to deal with this? i can't afford a doctor or anything at the moment and i can't find my back brace (plus its 90 degrees out)

I feel for you. OTC painkillers don't seem to do much.
It's not my back, but knees are my problem. Just went to the orthopedic surgeon for a consult, and my knee is too far gone for a partial replacement, and I'm too young for a full knee replacement. The prescription.... change jobs:dunno:.
Richard

yeah im actually trying to avoid all painkillers, cause i know the pain is what keeps me from hurting myself more.. i forgot to mention im only 20... so i guess a job change isn't out of reach, but i like working on cars too much haha..

have someone stand behind you, put their arms under your armpits, and lift you up onto their stomach, it will pop lower plates and upper plates back into place.

otherwise, goto a chiropractor

as a paramedic i disagree with that you could injurer your self more go to the chiropractor and let a trained professional look at you ..if it's job related workman's comp will cover it.

I agree with White. Let the pro's help you.

I tried to do too much too fast with my knees, and tried to get back into "running" shape after injuring myself in the shop when I was still in the Army. I'm paying for it dearly now. I'm getting 45% disability right now and I'm only 23 years old.

Now that may seem nice..... but I'd rather be able to work the job of my choice, than to make more money but hate life because I cant do *my* job anymore.

I've got one of those, I also suffer serious lower back pain...and I don't ever take prescription pain killers.
I get on that every night before I go to bed and every morning before I go to work.....speaking of work, I've got about 3 hours to catch the crummy, why am I up so early? lol

Anywho, that thing is amazing, there are others like it too, I highly suggest one.

If you already aren't and if you can I'd try some mild stretching, icing, hot bath, then work your way up to working out.

I've had/have severe back pain. going to a chiropractor did wonders. Below is some tips that I do to help reduce the pain. The twisting/popping is personal preference, and like mentioned above, really you should let a quack....I mean a doc do it for you. Everybodies treatment is different. But the first tip is the real important one.

-when you sleep at night, put a pillow under your legs. side sleeper, keep knees together and put a pillow between. ALWAYS keep knees together (as in don't have 1 leg extended, the other up). also try to keep both arms in same position. just like with your hips, if one arm is down while the other is up, it distorts your shoulders putting strain on your back

-my chiro will twist me in only one direction, so I've manage to duplicate this by either lying on my side and tucking my knees up toward my chest, then twist my upper body

-if that doesn't work, I'll sit on the floor, put my feet under something like I'm about to do a sit up (which happens to be the way I found this out), have my knees bent, then twist........oh it feels soooooo good when it pops!

-if you have one leg longer than the other, get a heel support and put it in the shoe of the shortest leg

-or heel supports in both shoes

-cheap shoes don't help. I bought a pair of $12 shoes at wm for crap work around the house. If I wear them all day, Im HURTN at the end of the day

-my wife uses these tiger patches. basically icey hot patches (just cheaper and I guess works better?)

-when I take hot showers, I'll stand there for a few with the hot water beating down on the spot. once warm, I'll twist and stretch it a bit

-be very mindful of how you sit. no slouching, both feet on the floor, blah blah blah

Just a suggestion, dad taught me to do this manuever, well, then nvm on doing it, haha, it needs a little training. My dad got paramedic training when he was a fireman back in his 20's and 30's.

I know 1 or 2 ways to fix a hurting back, as long as it IS a popped disk.

NOTE: try an ice/hot patch

I have bad neck pain and two vertabrae in my lower back are right on top of each other touching. I go to the chiropractor and it has helped a bunch. Plus I like the cute girls there so ill keep going. :D

That always helps! Last time I was in, there was a cpl of "barely legals" in there with HUGE racks, getting adjusted..........and the way the office is setup, you can see other ppl getting adjusted while you are waiting in one of the other "rooms". Gawd I luv summer!

For some reason, the last time I road my mountain bike for a good distance (on ROUGH pavement), it killed my back to the point where pain was shooting down my right leg unless I brought my knee up.

Popping your back yourself is obviously not the "best" thing to do, but when you're hurtn, anything helps! If your upper back hurts, what you can do is lay down on the floor on your stomach, have someone standing over you with their hands on both sides of your spine, take a deep breath, exhale. while you're at the end of your exhale, they should give your back a "push". If done right, it'll sound like a short clip of machine gun fire. I would not suggest this method lower than the rib cage, it can hurt like a mofo!

Without the right training that could paralyze someone

Well yeah, I agree 100%, but I was just stating what I learned, now I am young, a do not know as much as you do, but I do know only what I do know, so.... yeah, hands down, your right, I was just giving an idea.

I have used it on my friend's back before, and my dad's, my dad is constantly fixing my mom's back too, he feels for the disk that is out of place and pushes it back in. (with my mom on her stomach).
