Since you are on a truck board soliciting medical advice, I'll feel free to chime in as well. I would hope you use any advice here as a lead-in to getting expert opinion though.
In my opinion the human back is really what distinguishes us from every other animal. We developed it so we could see over the tall grass and avoid being eaten by leapords. The only thing supporting your back is muscle. You're on a downward spiral if you stop doing anything at all because it hurts. You need to get your back muscles developed.
I would try and starting doing deadlifts with light weights, or no weights. You can find you-tube videos of how to do them correctly. I know people that swear by chiropractors and that's probably a good idea. But you've got to get your muscles developed to support yourself.
Developing muscle around any joint helps a ton. Resistance training is neccesary to develop connective tissue strength and bone density. I can fall off a ladder into a pile of engine parts and brush it off where other people my age with similar incidents are limping around moaning for months and may never fully recover. And I'm just on that cusp where your body starts to degrade. Genetically, we are not designed for sitting on our asses. We spent tens of thousands of years getting to be who we are fighting mammoths and breaking rocks for cave construction with our foreheads--now in the last thouand years we have developed leisure time and tools and stuff and we stopped using our bodies. Working in a shop 8-10 hours isn't enough. 20 minutes 5x a week messing with some dumbells goes a long way toward keeping your body together.
