Ok, I know we have a few contractors and construction guys here, and a few who just know lots of stuff, so I got me some questions.
Wife and I are looking at a house. Her uncle who is a contractor went out to look with us yesterday and said he didn't see anything too terrible about it. I trust Sam to not steer us wrong, so I'm not too worried, but he did have one potentially large concern. About half the lights in the house don't work.
The house was built when low voltage wiring was in common use because it was cheap. Sam thinks that most of the issues with the lighting is bad relays because you can't feel them click when you hit the switch. I understand how the low voltage system works, but these relays aren't cheap. We may be looking at a grand just to get all the lights working (if relays are the only problem).
My question, for those of you who are familiar with this system is: How often do these things burn out? They can be upwards of $80 a pop. If they usually go bad in a year or two I am gonna be a lot less interested in this house.
If they usually last for 20 years, I can deal with that.
