i was wondering if its possible or even safe with the electric transfer case to shift on the go from low to high range, theres been a few times when ive been moving out of a yard onto the road in low range, (hubs unlocked) and instead of stopping, it would be a change if i could just shift to high range from low range 4rth gear into 2nd gear high range. ive done something similar in the past with a manual t/c truck , but with the electric shift theres a saftey that makes you be almost at a stop to go into/out of low range. i dont want to destroy a working transfer case though, even if it is the less-desireable electric shift.

I don't think the controller will let you do it.

In a 5-ton truck pulling a 155 through deep sand I would start in low range to get it going, then hammer down on the transfer lever and pop it into high range when I ran out of gears. Ain't good for maybe, but it lasted through Desert Shield/Storm with me doing that. I don't know why something that size doesn't have a synchronized auxillary like a road tractor.

Those of us who have had manual transfer case RBVs will tell you that you don't want to shift when you're moving AT ALL.

It makes a heck of a noise even at barely-moving speeds.

So, no, you really don't want to do this. And the controller won't let you; you have to have your foot on the brake and a speed below a very low threshold.

I accidentally caused my electric shift to do that already. I have a 94 and I killed the T-case last year and just happened to have one laying around for a 96 so I figured i'd swap it out. I get the thing together and realize there's an extra wire that went to some kind of speed sensor molded to the case on the original one and it was blocked off on the "new" one that I installed, so I just taped up the wire and everything worked fine. One day i'm driving through the snow in 4wd and somehow I managed to bump the low button and all I heard was this crazy rapid ticking sound coming from underneath my truck! So there is a pretty good reason why it won't let you shift while in motion and I suggest not messing with it.

Rob would you please explain to me why you haven't swapped a manual T-case into your ranger?

Remember I KNOW you so the usual excuses ain't gonna work.

BTW, did you rob the shift boot off that dark blue Gen2 in the back row?
BTW2, what happened to you this afternoon?

Well it's quite simple you see, the electric shift works just fine so I stuck with it.

Actually that isn't much of an excuse, it might have something to do with laziness or being too busy or something like that. Or maybe it's because i'd have to give up my cup holder shift boot which I actually do use. Maybe sometime this summer i'll consider throwing in the manual t-case, but the auto does work, so it's one of those things that i'm not forced to deal with immediately.

And yes I did grab that shift boot. I pulled that trans out of that Gen3 along with the shift linkage and I stood there staring at it and realized that even the she-devil will not charge me any extra if I went and grabbed that boot, so I did.

When you sent me that text message I was already less than a mile away from Berwick. I figured that since there was no gas today at the junkyard it wasn't worth letting my F250 suck up more of it to go across town again. Also I was on my 2.5 gallon "reserve can" and didn't want to stop anywhere in that area being that gas is $3.84/gal in Berwick compared to the $4/gal that I was seeing on the signs when I was in Hazleton.

I wish I could have stopped by though because i'm afraid that I will not get a chance to take a look at the "fresh meat" that arrived in the yard before it gets tainted by the weekend.

well, it was just a thought, kinda thinking of the old 2 1/2 ton dumps with the 2 speed rear axle that you could split-shift on the go. i know one of the wires was a speed sensor. dont need to grenade a t-case. ive done it years back with a dana 300 in a jeep CJ7. much beefier unit than whats in a ranger. i kinda thought that with there being a oil pump in there and a planatary unit, low range was accomplished by holding or releasing a band, much like a auto trans shifts gears. based on that i thought that on the go upshifts to high range could be done. i know why theres a safety, you wouldnt want a curious child / freind to push the low range button while going down the road in the winter in 4 high at 50 mph.
