2.3L ('83-'97) Low mpg


the fuel pump doesn't sense anything, and the fuel gauge has zero impact on how the engine runs
 
On the other hand if you managed to plug off the return line while you changed the pump that would cause the fuel pressure to increase a lot and it would run unpredictably
 
So I pulled all the gas out of the tank. Lately it’ll say it’s empty and it’ll take 6 gallons to fill it up. Thought that was fishy. Syphoned it out and it had 10 more gallons in it. Saying it was almost empty. I installed the pump with the tank half full. Now it won’t read that it has any fuel unless it has 8 gallons in it. Then it’ll barely move above empty. So my thought is that it’s not getting bad mpg. It just is only reading half the tank.
 
Gas mileage is miles driven divided by gallons used. Anything else is just a wild ass guess.
