Is it easier and cheaper to regear both axles or the transfer case? In 1st gear low range my ranger goes way too fast and won't crawl worth a darn (3:27 gears with 4.0 and 5 speed). I'm sure the clutch hates me. This is with 29" tires too. What do you all think I should do?

Regearing the axles is your best bet. To my knowledge there are no other gear sets available for the tcase. If you would to really crawl, you should look into doubler kits (adding a second transfer case planetary set) or you can swap 4 banger trans internals into your 4.0 transmission to get a slightly lower 1,2,3 but you will have a larger step from 3rd to 4th that some people do not like for everyday driving.

I am running a doubler, 4 banger gears, and 36s, and I am more than happy with the final crawl ratio with 4.10s in my axles (93.8:1 final crawl)

Your cheapest/easiest option would be to pickup a set a axles already geared to 3.73 or 4.10 and swap them right into your rig. (3.73 axles are dime a dozen and super popular, where as 4.10 D35s are getting scarce)

Yeah I was thinking 4.10's, just buying the gearset for the axles. Biggest tire I'd get would be either 31's (which I have a set), or maybe 33" in a few yrs or so. Would 4.56 be better or just 4.10 for the DD?

Agreed, change your axle ratio.
Changing the t-case gears wouldn't do anything to help when you're on the street anyway.

4.56:1 is a great gear ratio for 33" tires (4.0L), however if you think you'll be running around on 31s for awhile, I'd say go with 4.10. 4.10 is still quite acceptable with 33s, but 4.56 might be a bit much for 31s.

Ok...old post of mine but here we go. Been wanting to swap gears. Went with 4:56 with 31” General ATX tires. I also have a full set of 32” Mastercraft MXT’s mud terrains. Did the swap during the Covid plandemic. Gotta say I am super pleased and should have done it long ago. I don’t do much hwy so it works well as a DD and off road it is WAY better. Clutch loves me now. Not cheap but worth every penny! Speedo is way off as well as the trip odometer but meh I can live with it.

I don't know if '94 still had a mechanical speedo jobby, but I hear they are pretty easy to swap. I know if its done electronically its a little more more, need to reflash the ECM.
