so can valve seals be replaced without having to remove the heads? I plan on possibly replacing the motor in the next couple years(i believe i bought a truck with an abused motor) with a used one unless doing something that might be cheaper than i think can help the problem. Im getting low compression, 110 in 2 cylinders, and some valves are leaking. How much does it cost for a valve job or whatever would need to get done? I don't know much when it comes to this part of motors, yet, trying to learn. Thanks for the help.

I changed the valve seals in mine with it all still in there, and even with a 3" bodylift it was tight.

Valve seals just keep oil from running into your engine (blue smoke for a short time after startup) If your compression is low due to leaky valves, you need to check out the valves themselves and the seats in the head... heads have to come off for that.

guess ill just let it ride for now. im only gonna use it for dump runs and home depot trips. Then im going to just throw a used motor in and mod that when i get more cash flow. it seems to run ok other than constant 1500rpm idle once warm and a little rough at times and a CEL for misfire cyl 1.

A nice set of rebuilt, loaded heads for that thing are only about $300 on ebay. Add another $150 for headbolts and gaskets and new injectors parts (o-rings, filters, and caps). That's probably cheaper and much less time consuming than trying the fix the heads that are on it. Plus if you can read a torque wrench and are halfway decent with a socket set you can do it yourself.

Repairing the top end, heads, will probably not fix all the trouble. If the motor has been abused there most likely is ring/cylinder wear to consider. You may spend the money for heads and still have compression and oil consumption issues.
