My 1999 Ranger has a pretty audible whine coming from the power steering pump, a bit louder when turning but always there. Works fine and has been this way since I bought it used a couple of years ago. Just wondering if this is a trait of these or should I be concerned?

Ford power steering pumps are known for it. Other than annoying, there is no concern of failure.

The only fix I’ve found is to get a Motorcraft pump from a dealer. The aftermarket rebuild I tried before that was louder than the one I was replacing.

Think yours is loud? You ought to hear mine with the vented hood I have. Everything is loud. Alternator, power steering pump, the MAC intake with Spectre stainless steel mesh filter roars. But, I like mechanical noise. Much prefer that than the noise a tesla makes. LOL!

I thought it was a rule that rbv's had to have power steering pumps noisier than any other vehicle🤷. Just like mustangs take out crowds. Or dodges eat transmissions for lunch, or teslas burn down, or chevys suck, just a law of nature

Use type F and pull a vacuum on the reservoir. That will quiet it down some.

Ford power steering... Just noisy! I use Lucas power steering in my gen2 and my 88 stang.. only wines at full lock so I can't complain!

To add to @broncc said. I've heard that the PS system has a bad setup that gets air in it. If you can get all of the air out of the system, the noise will stop (allegedly). Never seen it the wild though. Otherwise, the ford whine in normal. IMO it's even worse on the Aerostar. My Lincoln had a moderate whine when turning and performed as it should. It's only when, all of a sudden, it quits whining, you should worry.

Of all the Ford's I've had (9 I think...) I've only had ONE with a noisy pump... not sure how...

Put a manual rack on it. No more noise.

Use a pulley and rope system like old sailing ships. That would be much quieter.
