Loud Power Steering

Ok so how the hell do u get air out only way I know how is moving the wheel side to side

Sometimes a vacuum pump works. Stick an adapter on the top of the reservoir and pull vacuum while moving the wheel lock to lock with the front end up on jacks (engine off). Sometimes you have to crack the lines at the rack one at a time while turning the correct direction for the line that's open and bleed it that way.

Thank you

It helps to get the tires off the ground first, then yep side to side, but you cant hit the stops or you gotta start over. You can also use a vacuum pump off the top. use the right size rubber cork to fit where the cap goes and pump away.

Whining steering pumps can often be quieted down by using Type F fluid if it calls for it OR swapping out for a high quality ATF fluid more than once until it's flushed clean.

I have found synthetic ATF to work the best.

I was given a case of royal purple ATF once and refuse to put it in my transmission so I used it to flush the power steering on my ranger (intention was to use the royal purple a few times then refill the final time with motorcraft Mercon V). But the royal purple seemed to work nice and quiet so I kept using it as power steering fluid. To be fair my 2009 never made much noise anyway though, it has a way different pump than earlier rangers (pretty sure it's Japanese since so are the motor and transmission).

On the 4WD Rangers, there's a tiny PS fluid cooler/radiator... like 4 square inches... always amusing.

Do tell... WTHeck evil shyt happens when you hit the stops?... (which are there for a reason)

I made a P/S cap that has a hose attached that I can pull a vacuum using my A/C vacuum pump. works very very well i will post pics if I can find it haven't used it for a while. also made a jar that can be attached to a brake system with the A/C vacuum pump and can bleed brakes with it as well..

What's wrong with royal purple?

It's a "universal" fluid, and since such a thing does not exist, it's garbage...

Universal and multi vehicle transmission fluid was made to be easier for places like jiffy lube or AutoZone so they don't have to stock so many different types of proper OEM spec fluid.

I think it lets air in, or is just stressful on the pump. That noise a fully locked steering pump makes sounds to me like its straining. It might be normal, but I'm just weird about some things.

There is probably a relief valve with bypass route to prevent dead-heading the pump. That is most likely what changes the sound but wouldn’t hurt anything or introduce air.

This is what the pressure relief valve does on the back side of the pump where the high pressure line goes. When you hit the bump it bypasses the pressure so the sound changes. But yea it doesn't hurt or add air. It's just making that whiney groaney noise cause high pressure fluid has changed direction. Every hydraulic power steering system has a relief valve like this or yes you would just blow up the lines or pump everytime you turn the wheel...

Back in the day there use to be people who would tap the power steering box for pressure inlets and outlets to add ram assist steering. Used the same pump but somehow took strain off the pitman arm and steering linkage and added power to the ram using the same available pressure. That could quite down the pump...

It was a mod I knew from my dodge days... Never did it myself but knew people who did. Only problem was it was super illegal for street use because there was no return on the steering wheel. The ram held the wheel basically locked around turns so instead of releasing the wheel and having it return to straight, you had to turn it back so it was a bit dangerous in places like parking lots since it was more like driving a boat than a car.

Then again old dodge trucks used Saginaw pumps that didn't make noise anyway.... Pretty sure everyone but Ford was using Saginaw pumps lol. Think I've seen some conversions on rangers to jeep or Chevy Saginaw pumps.
