I have a 97 ranger ext. cab 4x4, and I have done a one-peice aluminum driveshaft, no lift. I can be cruising around about 55 and let off the gas to just coast in gear, (auto.) and there is no throttle pressure just rolling when it shifts into high gear it sounds like something hitting a heat sheild or something. It sounds like its coming from the back or maybe the middle of the truck. I cant see anything wrong, just wanted to get some suggestions or anything to help.

you know when at moderate speed and you start down a hill and let off the gas, if its in a lower gear it will shift into a higher gear to coast down it. when it does that this is when it will make the noise. Olso sometimes when on the brakes slowing down to stop or turn and the tranny down shifts without the foot on the gas, it will do it.

Did you trim back the skid plate on the fuel tank?

The aluminum driveshaft is a bigger diameter than the stock 2 piece, and even the steel one piece for that matter, which makes it much more vulnerable of hitting the skid plate. Look underneath the truck and see if there is any "fresh" looking scrape marks on either the driveshaft, the fuel tank skid plate, or the carrier bearing crossmember. You did remove the carrier bearing mount plate, right? Its okay to leave the crossmember, although its possible to remove it too, but the mount plate needs to go or you are sure to put some nice dents in the driveshaft.

Oh yeah I got plenty of clearance, I trim the skid plate back and cumtom fab a braket for the rear of the skidplate. I have plenty of flexin room. Also the noise did it once or twice before the conversion.

Did you have to change the drive flange on the rear diff ??

Being he has a 4.0 equipped truck, he has a 8.8 out back. No need to change the pinion flange.
