Loud Exhaust Note after going 55mph

do you have a long bed or short bed? reason i am asking is because if it is long bed there may be a carrier bearing thats going bad. thats what is sounds like to me. is it a humming sound? any vibration?

its a long bed, regular cab. its a very loud humming sound that again, once in 5th gear it gets louder when steadily going 55-65 mph. its not when i accelerate... it accelerates fine, just when i'm i'm going those speeds holding steady at 2K RPMS.

carrier bearing? where would this be located?

Just a note, I was able to get a meteric combination wrench on my O2 sensor, after I unplugged it of course. I'm thinking with one of the flex-head ratchetting wrenches it would be even easier. I do have a O2 socket too, but made more progress with combination wrench, I liked it because I could see progress geting done, with socket it was hard to tell, after you getting it broke loose.... plus the wire & plugg weren't getting in the way as much.

Just for your information, I also have an 89 4X4 5 speed long bed Ranger and there is no drive shaft carrier bearing. The rear drive shaft is a two piece shaft with an internal spline that allows it to lengthen and shorten.

This design has been known to make noise when short on grease. I took mine apart and thoroughly cleaned and lubed it to prevent any future problems. It's really easy to do.:icon_thumby:

mines a 4X2, would the same setup apply as far as the 2 piece drive shaft with internal spline?

Nope. Your truck has a single piece driveshaft and a slip yoke that slides into the transmission.

You may want to start looking for rearend problems.

Would have to agree here. This sounds very much like when I stripped a few teeth off of the ring gear in the dif on my Chevy Luv. At a certain speed, it would get this growl that would slowly build the faster you went. Replaced the rear end and it went away.

the cat does have the heat shield. it's not loose or anything and everythign seems to be held in place. thanks for the info on the tranny(ies). i'll keep an eye out for rear-end noises.
