Loud Clunk sound

I got this clunk noise starting in my rear wheel/axle area. If I shake the truck side to side by grabbing the bed, and get it going good, you can hear very loudly the clunk sound right at the wheel on both sides.

Any idea what this is about? Thanks

Jack up the rear and grab a wheel. Pull in and push out. See if it makes the noise.

Just play in the axles. Every vehicle with a solid rear axle that I've owned has done it. My Grand Marquis, my green Ranger and my white one have all done it. Buddy's Dakota did it and so does his full size Chevy.

Have they been properly maintained? I can assure you that is not normal. My s10, ranger, f150 and f250 have never had this problem

My F-150 and both Rangers have had this 'thuk thuk thuk' noise when you shake the back end of the truck laterally. It's just end play in the axles. Unless it's REALLY loud or you feel it in the back (like it's floating side to side while driving) it's normal. And yes, they'd all been regularly maintained, and had high miles on them.

Guess i've just been lucky so far

He still oughta jack up the rear end & yank hard on each wheel....if he ends up on his back with a wheel/axle on his chest....he'll be glad he took the time...

I was told by Chevy one time that while not all the S-10s do it, unless you have so much end play (can't remember the spec) it is considered a normal characteristic of the axle.

That was not a fun noise to find, and after all the time and parts spent fussing with it to be told it was "normal". That guy was not happy.

Guess he shouldn't have bought a used GM.

Maybe not normal for Rockwells :icon_thumby:, but it seems to be pretty common otherwise. I listed vehicles from all of the big three and have driven every single one of them at some point or another and they were perfectly fine. My truck doesnt always do it, you have to shake it just right and sometimes violently. The green one's 7.5 did it easily.

Learn something new every day. Like i said earlier, i guess i've just been lucky so far.
