I can't tell if you're discussing really stiff springs that are skittering all around, or that low frequency, under damped kind of bounce (usually shocks). My 2004 edge is really pretty damned smooth for an unloaded solid axle pickup with leaf springs and no weight in the back. Given a bad enough bump or washboard it'll get squirrelly, but that's to be expected. With 300lbs in the back for the winter the ride is downright luxurious. That's with 15yo factory shocks (as far as I can tell).
I'm leaning toward shocks being an issue myself. Even with the 1,750 leafs I have in mine, wheel hop is not an issue. Tires may also be part of the problem. When I still had the crappy OEM Goodyears on the truck, the traction control would kick in on occasion on really rough roads. That went away when I ditched the tires.
