loss of power and unsteady idle

As I drive down teh road my truck seems to lose power and there is no acceleration at all. And it also likes break up when im accelerating. Sometimes when i'm sitting at a red light my tach goes from 1,500 r.p.ms and the drops to 500 and it surges back and forth. I can not figure out wat i rong with it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs. I'd start with plugs, wires, and a fuel filter.

See if you have any codes stored. It's easy to do with a jumper wire and the check engine light.

Get a fuel pressure guage and see how the fuel pressure is. Does it run better with the tank full. If you dont know how old the plug wires are change them along with a complete tuneup including PCV. May as well get it ready for the summer plus it makes diagnostics easier by eliminating variables. Dont skimp on preventive maint especially with the rise in fuel prices a tune up will pay for itself in no time. Make sure all your vacuum lines are soft and fit tite. Disconnect the batt for 1/2 an hour to reset the computer and run it for at least 20 mins before running the codes.
