I've been waiting for my tax returns so I could finally buy a remanufactured T-5 transmission from Astro Performance for my v-8 ranger to replace my non-world class leaker.

Well, they don't take non-world class models and a no-core means "go fly a kite". Other places I've looked at have the same policy.

So, now I have to buy a brand new one(which is what I should've done in the first place) for $1400 shipped. :annoyed:

Stupid.

you could always try to buy a core from a jk or craiglist

Nope. Not doing that again. That's how I ended up with the one I have now. Put $900 into it and the case itself is worn out, unfixable.

i think what he is saying is look for a junk world-class trans to use for a core so you can buy a reman....

Ooooooh. I see. Well, there was no local listings, but I did do an extensive search on eBay and I can get a rebuilt with a one year unlimited mile warranty for $1000 with the core charge.

But, then again, for $400 more I could have a brand spanking new one...........

Hey, you have two other choices...you said you just dropped $900 into the one you have, I'm assuming you had it rebuilt, and the case itself is bad, why not just go get another T5 from a mustang and use the case with your internals?? It can even be from a 4 cyl mustang...Or you can get my WC that I have, less than 250 miles (just can't have my motor!!)...I built it with all new internals and with 335 first...It's not hard to do it yourself and does not take special tools to disassemble and reassemble...just a thought to save you a couple bucks:icon_thumby:

I'd sure go for the new one if it's a "Z" spec one. Seen way too many problems others have had even with rebuilt ones.

Thanks. I was thinking about that last year, but after researching it I found out that the WC and NWC cases and internals are just too different, as in, they cannot be interchanged. But, a new or even usuable case for a NWC is non-existant.

Actually, my brother rebuilt it. The $900 was for the master rebuild kit, new gear cluster, and a new 5th gear. I shoulda dropped this lemon when I had the chance. Internally, it's brand new. Externally, that's where the problem is. The WC bearing that's in the case has an o-ring around a flange. The NWC is simply pressed into place, but my brother recalls that it more or less "slid" into place rather than pressed into place. He tried to compensate with RTV, but it still weeps. Plus, I hate gear oil. NWC use gear oil and WC uses ATF.

So..........what exactly was that option 2? You want to sell me your rebuilt tranny?

Your WC bearing your talking about, is it the main bearing input shaft?? Because you can get upgraded mainshaft retaining spindles, the aluminum wears out, and the new upgraded unit is a steel one...Is this the bearing your talking about??
SVT

Ok. You got your input shaft retainer. Ok? The bearing right below that that gets half of it covered by the retainer. It's what holds the gear cluster. That bearing "cap" on yours has a flange and an o-ring on that flange that keeps it sealed. Mine gets pressed in a certain depth.

I'll try to find a pic for you if it's still cloudy, I just got home from work and it's almost 1:00am.

Is the input retainer that is worn or is it the case?? If its the retainer, thats a simple and easy upgrade, if its the case, well, you know that one...:icon_thumby:

This bearing. Not the retainer itself, but the bearing that sits behind one of the corners of the retainer. I made an orange dot outline of roughly where the bearing is in relation to what can be seen.

Sorry, but this is the only pic I have of this thing.

But as you can see, oil weeps past this bearing. Most drips straight down between the bellhousing and tranny, but some also weeps into this hole in the bellhousing. Trickling all the way down to the front of the bell housing.

So, to put it simply, it's the case that's shot.

Okay, I see what your saying...what about tapping those two holes for plugs?? Just trying to help you figure out a way not to have to buy another trans and save some $$...
SVT

No. I've tried using the expensive liquid gasket around the edge and hustling the tranny back into the bellhousing before it dried. Worked for 2 weeks until the oil found it's way out.

That's what I'm saying. On the WC models, that bearing has a lip on the backside and a o-ring sits on that lip, which seals 100+ better than my press fit.

I must've taken out and put back in this tranny at least 5-6 times last summer. I only want to do it one more time with a new one..................................

I hear ya, well, at least you got practice taking your trans out, you should be able to take it out in 15 minutes like I was able to do:icon_thumby:
