Looking to get a ranger!

I have an 05 3.0 ext auto and love it. Granted I have an Edge model which has a little beefer rear axle to get the larger tires down the road. I do a lot of highway driving and average around 18 mpg w/o a tonneau cover. My axle code is 97 which is an open 8.8 with 4.10's. Add a locker and it is game on.

My fault. I can't keep the two straight for some reason. Disregard my previous post, unless you are looking for that vintage.

Nah it's not your fault. Just for future reference. :icon_thumby:

The only Ranger that got the "beefier" axle would be found in an FX4 Level 2 which has a 31 spline 8.8. All the rest are 28 spline 8.8's. Nothing special...

maybe he meant beefier cuz the 8.8 is stronger than the 7.5 and with 4.10 it can move bigger tires

This is a lesson for us all that as we build more of a 4x4 we lose a daily driver.I hate the A4LD don't trust em anymore and I like the way a 4.0 chugs down the road at low RPMs. I have a 3.0 in my Taurus really like it there but I think it would be easy to overload.

Ok, so I went and did me some research tonight and here is what I found.

The A4LD is a C-3 with a overdrive gear put on it.
The 4R44 and 4R55 are basically the A4LD updated with some electronics.
The 5R55 is similar in design to the 4R44/A4LD but is a different transmission. It's kinda the way the 2.9 is similar to the 302, but nobody who knows anything about them is gonna try to argue that one is based off the other.

So basically the 5R55E is a glorified C-3. :icon_rofl:
I'm glad I got a 3 yr unlimited mile warranty with this transmission. I have a feeling i'm going to be needing it. Especially only having 115k on the truck and it's on its 3rd transmission.

Dunno about the first one. The one I just pulled out burnt up the clutches.

Do you have a cooler on it? 3 trannys seems a bit excessive for the short period of time you are talking about. :icon_confused:

Its not like the 4.0 is a huge powerhouse, maybe towing? Lack of fluid? Putting in the right fluid?

Is there any difference between the older 5r55e And the newer ones? Ive read alot about problems with the a4ld although i nver had any myself. But i havent seen much on the 5r55e, also does anyone know why in the manuels it shows a auto 4.0 can tow 3000lbs more then a 5speed?

I am also looking for a new to me ranger and I found one that has frame rust (at least according to the owner) and supposedly not repairable is rusting frames common and if so any specific places prospective buyers should pay attention to?

Ford consistently under-rates the manual transmissions because most people anymore do not have a clue how to properly drive a manual transmission, so they don't want them coming back with a burnt out clutch under warranty. If it does, they can claim that you were towing more than the truck was rated for.

I've hauled and towed with my 5-speed 3.0L. I've towed around 4k lbs before with no problems and am still on the factory clutch at around 90k miles despite the fact of also learning how to properly drive a 5-speed on the truck (my dad taught me). I've been driving manual trans trucks since I was 17 and the few times I've jumped in an auto trans vehicle, I always find myself groping for the shifter and usually the first stop or two thump my left foot into the floorboards.... just not used to not having a clutch and stick, lol. I'm probably closing on 200k miles behind the wheel of a manual trans truck now.

No, the 4R44 is a glorified C-3.
The 5R55 is something that looks vaguely like a glorified C-3.

I've taken a 4R apart and I've seen a 5R apart, they are fairly different on the technical level. For example, you can't put the clutches of a 4R in backwards. My one room mate on the other hand managed to do it with his 5R.

I'd say its something like saying an Escape is a glorified B2. It sure looks like it, but we all know its not.

I have had the truck for a few months. I've only put about 700 miles on it, if that.

These trucks come with a small tranny cooler on them. I'm not sure about 2wd's, but 4x4's do regardless of engine.

The truck doesn't have a trailer hitch, it has a tow hook at the rear. As for the wrong fluid or lack of, I flushed all the fluids when I got the truck.
