Looking to get a ranger!

lol hittin 100mph proves they fly...on the road
I had mine up to 115 once when I was young and stupid. Don't ask how I got past the speed governor, because I have no idea.

Now for the most part I'm perfectly happy plodding along behind the wheel of my F-150 with the mighty 300-6, lol.

Good tires and a good driver with a 2wd Ranger can go places. And in the winter I just kept a set of tire chains with me in case things really got bad. The few times that I did get my Ranger stuck was with bad tires (poor tread design or they were nearly bald). The only exception was when I was running mud tires and ended up with all four tires on solid ice and didn't have chains at the time.

Ok so the 4.0 is sounding like a better option now.

How is the reliability of that one?

I guess a 4.0 OHV, 4x4, ext cab and 5 speed should move pretty good and get good MPG"s since I will have a tonneu cover and no weight in the back.

it would do you good and best of all you dont have to worry about snapping a timing belt

Well it seems the 3.0 V6 is VERY common, so is it going to be bad if I get that?

I mean will I get more than 16-18MPG with the 3.0 4x4 Ext Cab?

if you go for a automatic with stock tires 16-18 average and upwards of 22-24 on open highway driving @ 70-80mph.(speed i got the best mileage with) if you have the 5 speed (recommended) you will do better on gas by 1 or 4 mpg depending on driving style and it will get you everywhere you need to go and have enough there to get the harder work done. you wouldnt be dissapointed unless you have a need for speed and gobs or torque all the time. the 3.0 likes to be run in higher rpms. great motor. had my truck 5 years now and i love it, just wish it was a 5 speed!!

Im goign 5 speed thats a deffinate. I dont have a need for speed, my mustang is going to have over 525 horse at the crank this summer so if I wanna go fast I will jump in that.

Just looking for a nice reliable daily ride!

well then, with that being said a 3.0 is a good match for you then....happy hunting!!!

Nothing wrong at all with the 3.0L. I know a lot of guys knock 'em, but mine did everything I ever asked of it and then some. I'd expect between 17 and 21 mpg around town with a 4x4 supercab 3.0L and 5-speed. If it's not doing that good, then there is probably something that needs fixed on it. Well, either that or it's been lifted with big tires, lol, but if you correct for the speedo readings and have the right gears in it, you should end up about the same for fuel economy. My choptop is usually right around 17 mpg around town even in it's lifted state with big bias ply tires.

My 4.0 has over 240,000 miles on it, and still runs like a dream. Verrrry reliable.
And I get between 17 and 23 mpg.

Well tomorrow I am going to drive 2 rangers. Both are X cab and 4x4, but one is 3.0 5 speed and one is 3.0 Auto.

Just want to make sure im going to like the truck. I really havent found ANY 4.0's around here for sale, and tomorrow I will know if I can deal with the power output of the 3.0. Some people said its slow, some say its fine. IF the truck can hold its own, I dont care.

Yeah I understand gearing, ive got 4.56's in this Jeep and had 4.88's in my other one. But im assuming the trans is geared differently.

Is it true the 4wd on the Rangers is running through an NP231 T Case?

I was thinking about some 235/75R15 BFG AT's on Cragar soft 8 rims... Thats like a 28 1/2 ish.
