I have been looking at an 03 ranger with 128,000 miles on it. It's an edge,4.0,and a nice looking truck. It runs and drives real nice also. good ball joints, bearings, very good service history. It is a 1 owner truck and the asking price is $7995.

I'm sure I could get it for $7,000 taxes and all, but is it worth it? I currently own a 99 OHV 4.0 ext. cab auto. and am planning on keeping it. My pushrod 4.0 has been a great, trouble free engine. I am hoping to get 200k out of the 4.0 sohc in this truck. Is it possible? If so, what'll I have to replace.

Here is the link.

Any help is greatly appreciated. :icon_cheers:

That sounds awful steep. Considering that the 2003 is the exact same thing as a 2001 to 2010, almost the exact same thing as a 1998-2000 (SOHC vs OHV), and almost the same thing as a 1993-1997 (SOHC vs. OHV and TTB vs. IFS), his price seems out of line compared to all the other nearly identical rangers made since 1993. I would give him 5000 tops. If it had lower miles, it'd be worth more, but a 2003 with 130,000 on it is about the same thing as a 1996 with 130,000 miles on it, unless the TTB and OHV engine makes that big of a difference to you.

Well the newer a truck is the more its actually worth... I got my 99 for 5000 when it blue booked at 7000. Thats actually just about right for that year and accessory level in terms of being a decent price.

And he is looking to step up from the OHV to the SOHC... The truck he has is already a good powerful truck.

You could always save the money on not buying that truck and get yourself a tuner/programmer and some other mods for your current truck.

I am going to keep my 99 OHV truck. It is my d.d. and i wouldnt dream of selling it. I'm going to get this blue one for a second vehicle and to use for towing. My OHV will never change hands until it has rusted into the ground, I can assure you of this. As long as the SOHC will last at least 200k, i have no real reason to not buy this truck. i can get it for $6500 and thats almost 2 thousand below book. So, what y'all think.:icon_thumby:

I say FU I'm buyin it! :D

I'm not entirely sure how long the SOHC will last but I would assume it could last atleast that long. I know all the engines I have ever had could stand the test of time... My 2.8L has almost 500,000 and my 3.0l should see past 300,000. I don't see why that one wouldn't

sounds like a good deal to me...for 6500. If it has been taken care of really well the mileage isn't as big of a deal. There's a dealership in town asking 11,500 for a truck same year and engine as yours only its silver...but the dealership in my town is crazy...haha good luck

o hell if that truck cant tow then its a whimp and you can put a drop down hitch

Its not that it couldn't tow... its that its not really a tow type rig... a low to the ground truck would be way better off not to mention the SOHC engine is putting out about 15 -20 more HP then that truck.

Only if you're planning on reving it past 4000 RPMs.

Sorry, but I just had to clear up a very common misconseption about how the SOHC is "more powerful" than the OHV. The only difference between the two 4L's is that the OHV revs to 4000 while the SOHC revs to 6000. The extra horsepower comes in that extra 2000 rpms. While that is useful when you're accelerating with the pedal on the floor, shifting at redline, that's not how most of us go around driving everyday, and is an especially bad idea when you have a trailer behind the truck. So in everyday driving and towing, there is no difference between the two 4L's. :icon_thumby:
