I have a 1962 IHC Scout 80 that I am looking at putting swapping in a 2.9L V6 engine, 5-spd trans, and the transfer case from a 1988 Ranger. Has anyone heard of someone doing this? This should be a good winter project and should not quite double the power output. The engine that is in it has like 80 horse or something like that. Any thoughts or opinions would be welcome as I do not know a lot about this engine/trans/tcase. On another note I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4 door 4.0L 5-spd 4x4 that I absolutely love.

Needs moar 5.0.

Are you stuck on using the 2.9L? Would be tempted to go w/ a earlier '90s 4.0L, it will be about the same amount of work. 2.9L does the job and is pretty easy to work on, but is notorious for head cracking, oiling problems, TFI failures, etc. Plus been out of production since '92.

a scout?? get good motor for it... 4.0 at least... maybe a straight 6 (300), or hmmm a 345 v8?

The reason I am looking at the 2.9 is that I am getting it for free with everything that goes with it. Getting the trans and t-case too. The engine I has low miles on a rebuilt. I was thinking about going with a 4.0L until this came up. I am not set where I can buy a 4.0 now, and am getting this 2.9 for free.

it can be done, and if you gear it right then you'll be fine.. go for it, if you are set on the 2.9 go for it. its a fine motor..

I have 4.27 gears in the front and rear with a Pwr-Lok in the rear. As I am getting this engine, trans, and t-case for free I am set on it for now. I was doing some reading in the tech library and it had a couple of topics on swapping a 4.0 for the 2.9. Maybe something to consider down the road. No matter what I will be getting a big improvement over the old 152 slant 4 that is in my Scout currently. I did consider a V8, but decided against it as it does not suit my purpose. I should be getting it in a couple of weeks and then can start on the engineering phase of the project. Once I start I will post pictures if anyone is interested.

Well, think there is enough room up front for it or just anything within reason. I had a '64' with the slant four and even though it was just a 4x2, it could go thru a lot of stuff (not much HP but a lot of torque). Sounds like a fun and really different swap..Floor boards went on mine bad time.

the slants are a nice motor.. if set up properly... and have more then enough torque, but the 2.9 is a decent torque motor to.

I dont have an answer for you but I just want to say you are combining my 2 favorite trucks! My dad had 2 '62 scouts.

I'll always love those old scouts. Good luck with the swap! You should post your build here on TRS!

Having a good motor in an old scout would be fun they have a character I really like.To much work for a 2.9 that motor is not the 4.0 you liked so much.

i've owned 4 scouts over the years. great vehicles for sure. really tough. yours should be a fun build. i had scout 196 4 cyl that i swapped into an old military M170. almost doubled the hp and torque of the 134 4 cyl in the jeep. course the 196 weighed well over #500, but it did make the jeep perform really well!
good luck and have fun with your build!

i put a 2.9 into an 82 amc eagle before.it actually performed better than the 258 i took out.

i'd say if you got a 2.9,a scout that needs a motor, and the ability to do the swap-go for it.
then,even if you find a 4.0,the hard part's done.just swap it over.

I know it is not the same, but free is free. I will make sure to post up the pictures of the build once I get started. Wont have the engine for a couple of weeks, so that will give me time to get the engine out of the Scout and get some of the prep work done. Then it will be time for measurements and fabrication. So much fun can't hardly wait.

I bet! :D 1988+ is a good year because of no EGR system, but the down fall is the use of fuse links in the main harness in the 86-88 models. 89+ use a power distribution box w/ fuses which may be more ideal. But then again, free is free. Would recommend an EVTM, but not sure how practical it would be to get where you are located, but would be a huge help. Thought I would just throw that out there. Will be interesting to see your build thread.
