ok guys whats the longest time you have driven your truck strait? looking for some info for a future road trip, what rpm does the 2.9 like to be at....and what speed does that translate into? then post info on your trip:

1. how far you drove, with how many pit stops

2. gas milage

3. avarage speed

4. what year and engine you had at the time

1. ive drove my 2002 ranger from san diego, ca to central oklahoma many times.

2. ive made the trip on 33s and 35s so gas milage sucked.

3. on 33s with 4.56 gears was about 75 to 80 mph at about 3000 rpm
on 35s with 4.56 gears was about 80 mph at 2900 rpm
on 35s with 4.88 gears was about 70 to 75 at 3100 rpm and over 1000# in the bed

4. 2002 4.0 sohc 4wd

oh ya, i only stopped for gas and one time for a snooze at 1 am but i didnt see there was a railroad parrallel to the 40. i shut my eyes for 10 minutes and when i heard the train, i drove off pissed off. mapquest says about a 22 hour and i did it in 18.

when i finally got there, i thought the truck ways gonna burn down. the engine compartment was hot as hell but the engine temp was normal.

1. Unfortunately the longest trip I've been on in the Ranger in the short time I have owned is Minot, ND --> Minneapolis, MN (500 miles). Total of 4 stops: First two to piss, third to get gas, fourth to get a burrito in St. Cloud.
2. 20.2 mpg on winter blend gasoline until it started getting more hilly.
3. 75 mph (give or take). Engine ran a little under 3000rpm.
4. 2003, 4.0L SOHC, 5 speed manual, 4x4, 4.10 gears.

I will be taking it on a 1650 mile trip in about 2 weeks (will have to spend the night somewhere half way). I expect the gas mileage to be better since the gasoline running in it isn't the inefficient winter-blend stuff, but even if its not I'd be exceeding EPA estimates. If its still relevant I can report gas mileage and the likes.

Sorry that my trucks not the 2.9, but I understand that they get better gas mileage when running properly. When's your trip?

going to be going from roughly la in cali to sandia park in new mexico bout 800 miles and 12 hrs... im hoping to do it in one shot with a few 15 min breaks for gas and the truck...

That's not too bad, I drove from Oakland, CA -> Washington, CA in one sitting (was exhausted by the time I got there). Even worse me and a friend drove from Wichita Falls, TX -> Minot, ND without spending the night anywhere, in the winter (it was way too long of a trip to not stop anywhere). When are you going? If its soon I hope you have A/C, Arizona is hot! Have fun on your trip :icon_hornsup:.

I've taken my 97 reg cab, 5sd to Southernmost MS, the ocean.... lol.
bout 14 hrs i think..... 26 mpg, laid across truck and slept at truck stop.

taken 88 reg cab, bout 6 hrs, was just stupid loud, 16mpg.

04 4.0 4x4 5spd. from Houston to home, 22mpg, ext cab....ran like a dream, fun trip had cruise. quite cab noise, was a very pleasant trip in a very nice low mileage truck.

Frank

i go back and forth to home from school every couple weeks 200 mile trip
94 3.0 4x4 standard
no stops 4 hours striaght at 65 through ohio then 70 through indidana and michigan average 19 mpg.

1. how far you drove, with how many pit stops
180 miles, with no stops. But that really isn't super far. That was one way. We then enjoyed the weekend and drove home.

2. gas milage
I think it worked out to about 18 or 19mpg. But this trip involved 2 mountain passes, so about 1/3 of the trip was flat, and the rest was very hilly, but it was freeway, not highway. It would have been higher if I wan;t going as fast as I was, or carry as much as I was carrying, not that is was a lot of weight or anything.

3. avarage speed
the whole trip was around 75-90mph except for the steepest uphill parts, but probably somewhere around 80mph was average.

4. what year and engine you had at the time
'93, 4.0, 4wd, with an extended cab, and loaded with 2 dirtbikes and a bunch of camping stuff in the bed. On the way back my cousin couldn't take the trailer, so I took it and I had 3 bikes on the trailer (small utility trailer), and even more camping stuff in the bed.

470 miles one way , 7.5 hours , 3 stops , 2 for fuel and 1 to get breakfast

2. gas milage

average was 17 to 19

3. avarage speed

NY and PA - 70 , WV - 75

4. what year and engine you had at the time

2000 3.0 Auto 4x4 31x10.50R15 tires , 3.08? gears in the rear

Houghton, MI to Putney, KY, 1000 miles each way.

Gas mileage was 25 overall.

Average speed on freeways was around 70.

2005 Ranger, 2.3L stick, 3.73 gears. Bed loaded down with two dirt bikes, a weeks worth of gear for two guys, I think I figured 900 pounds.

Farthest I drove on my 1987 with a 2.9L 5-speed was from Fairmont, WV to Lafayette, IN (can calculate the mileage). Don't remember the mileage from that I got on the trip, but I remember never seeing over 18MPG from that truck.

My 2006 4.0L 5-speed is a different story. I drove it from Fairmont, WV to Kileen, TX in 21 hours (straight drive was about 1365 miles). I averaged 360 miles per tank on that drive (20 gallon tank). Hauled a UHaul box trailer on the return trip and averaged 320 miles per tank. Drove a bit slower on the way back and drove it in two 12 hour days.

any of you guys know what rpm would be best for a 2.9? id rather drive a little slower and keep my engine happy...just not sure what rpm she likes....

my 2.9 seems happiest cursing around at 2500 rpm which equals out to be 70 mph. longest trip so far was eau claire, wi to woodstock, il which is roughly 310 miles. last trip i averaged about 18 mpg. 1989 ranger supercab 4x4 , auto, 2157515 tires 3.73 gears

I have been no more than 80 miles or so from my house in any of my vehicles. I don't really trust any of them to go further than that, nor do I have a reason to go further.

750 miles each way, NY to TN. 65-70 mph avg, 19 mpg. 2000 ranger 3.0, 4x4, 32" tires.
