Hello Ranger Experts,
Please consult your encyclopedic knowledge of older ranger models. In the next year I want to buy a truck for camping and travelling and skiing etc, I have a thing for 4cyls, hate automatics, unfortunately need 4wd, and would really like a 7ft bed for sleeping in the bed (with a topper). I don't care about the cab. Does this exist? Based on budget I am looking at third generation rangers.
Thanks
Brian in MT

There are 4x4 4-cylinder 5 speed 3rd gens, not sure about the long box but I'm assuming there were.

All I gotta say is good luck finding one...they're fairly rare. I would have bought one over my V6 but after looking for 6 months in three states I gave up.

if you find that in ANY generation ranger with your requirements i recommend you buy it and make it into what you want. even if that includes a rebuilt engine or trans because you are searching for a semi rare vehicle. i am sure if you put in the wanted section that you are willing to pay top dollar someone will be willing to part with the one they have. problem is it will most likely be a significant distance from your home. best of luck in your search.

if i remember correctly they never made a 4x4 4cyl in extended cab.

Less than 1% of finding one. It will only be in the 3rd gen or older (83-97 years). After 1998, there is no 4cyl made in a 4x4. But they do make a 4cyl with a 7ft box. Don't know about a 4x4 with a 7ft box.

If you let the tail gate down, theres your extra foot for 7ft. I know what you mean for sleeping the pickup bed. But I sleep under the stars, no topper.

I believe that in order for a long box, it has to be standard cab. All extended cabs are short box, or am I wrong?

I think you're right about that one. I've never seen a long bed extra cab Ranger. I wonder if a long bed will bolt right up to an extra cab.......:icon_confused:

Was the 2.0L motor available for the extended cab?

I'm thinking a extended cab with a 4x4 2.0L with a 4 speed, w/AC.:icon_rofl:

Now that would be sweet, wonder if it would break 65?

i drive everything VERY hard and i have had to pull every lima motor down to 3rd or 4th on the interstate when i climb hills. mind you, both of theme were 2wd.....

i could break 65 at 5000rpm in 3rd gear......

i have no idea if the 2.0 was available in the extended cab.

I know they didn't make supercab 4x4 2.3s and I'm almost positive they didn't make longbox 4x4 2.3s either.

There are 4 cylinder long boxes made from 93-97 with a four cylinder and four wheel drive according to Edmunds. I happen to have a preference for these vehicles as well and they are dificult to come by. My truck even had 4.10 gear ratios stock, which is pretty nice when you are towing things. :yahoo:

I have an 85 4cyl. 4x4, 5 speed, long bed, i bought for $500. I have no use for it now....

yes its stuffin 31's with no lift and cut fenders....

right on thanks for all the replies! I guess I'll just get over the long bed. I'm 6'0 and my girlfriends 6'1 so I'm sure the regular will be comfy on the diagonal. I have a feeling this is a good forum to know about if you have a ranger.

Just sleep on top of her :icon_thumby:
