locking hubs

ok well i dont want to sound dumb but im new to 4x4 and my ranger has warn locking hubs. so when i lock them is it just like having a locker in the diff or what. im just kinda confused
 
No you will still have a conventional open differential with the hubs locked in. When you put it in 4x4, locking in the hubs just allows the power transferred to the front differential to actually lock each of your front tires to the axle shafts and puts power to them.

The differential will still be an open diff, meaning that the tire with the most traction will not have any power, all the power will be transferred to the tire with the least amount of traction. A locker would send equal power to both tires at all times. The down side of a locker in the front is that it will effect the steering as the tires have to fight each other while turning because they are both traveling different distances.
