locking hubs?

when i lock my hubs in to the locked position, are they supposed to lock in, or not, cuz wen i turn them to the free position they lock sorta like its in a groove section, but wen i turn it to the locked position it doesnt do it, and was wondering if this is normal or not, cuz i wouldst want to b 4x4 and someone the hubs came unlocked.

If you disassemble the hub, it all makes sense. The hubs use spring compression to stay in the free position. The notch is there to hold them in this position. When you twist the dial to the lock position, the spring is unloading to a more natural position (closer to unloaded).

The advantage to doing it this way is the notch that holds the hub unlocked is plastic. If the plastic wears out, then the hub will lock in. While this seems to be an issue on road, it is a great design feature for off-road.

To answer your question in simple terms, yes. The hub is working as it should.

k thanx and yes it all does make sence, the truck hasnt moved in over a year now, and i was wondering if they were frozen or not, and its my first pair of locking hubs the rest were automatic locking, so i wasnt sure but ty
