I put a locker in a year ago, 8.8 rear end 4.10's It's an older powertrax model with the 8 springs in it. This winter it started acting up and making more noise, I did switch to synthetic 75w90 for winter. Now it seems to unlock more and more in a stait line. Sometime from a stand still the truck wont move and it just clicks like if it's staying unlocked. Can something be worn out? There really isnt much to wear.

Check the clearance between the cogs (rite in the center). If it's outta spec, it will cause the above mentioned problem. The proper clearance is mentioned in your installation instructions.

What would cause it to go out after a year? How do I fix it?

Washers behind the side gears adjust the in and out clearance.

The thrust washers? Do they make different sizes? Or is there shims available?

ok fine so if its now out of spec am I supposed to buy new thrust washer? All it sais is STOP and call powertrax if its out of spec.

Give them call. But the washers that come on a stock carrier will move the locker back in spec, seen it done. Powertrax may send you those.

Well its an old Richmond Gear locker not a no slip I reused the side washers in my diff, they were like new almost no miles on them. Was working fine for a year.

I called they said it could be worn out washers or maybe a spring that broke. Can't tell without taking it apart.

Pull the cover and measure the clearance at the center. If it's not in spec, you will either need new sections or shims. If it is in spec, it's most likely worn out. I highly doubt it's worn out... but the possibility is there. Most likely, your gonna have to go to Keystone Ford or Midtown and get some new side gear shims. They aren't all that expensive. This will also give you a chance to look at those springs and your center pin to make sure nothing is worn or broken.

Just talked to the guy at richmond gears, he said what I already knew but need confirmation. Just put some thrust washers on the side gears till it is back in spec for the gap. You can get those washers at any drivetrain shop or even Napa.

just a side note about this...when i got my open carrier i was missing one off the thrust washers...so i obviously needed to source another one. I called EVERYWHERE, and couldnt get ahold of one. I called 3 ford dealerships, and finally one of them said they could get some....except when they came they werent even the same size (diameters) I ended up getting one from the original carrier....so if you need extras i have NO idea where you would find them. If you do let me know.
