Hey guys,

looking to buy a ranger for my girlfriend and one of her dads friends has what i believe is a 95 with a 4.0 2WD with what should be a M50D-R1 manual tranny for 500 bucks but says it needs a new throwout bearing.... Now what does replacing a throwout bearing involve?

Surfin the web i found out that a throwout bearing can also be called a clutch release bearing. And a few places said i should replace the slave cylinder with it. At autozone and advance auto i can buy a slave assembly that says it includes a clutch bearing with it... is this what i need? and is there anything else i should be replacing with the bearing and slave cylinder? (and do i really need to replace both or can i get away with just replacing the bearing cuz i can buy one of those by itself as well....?)

thanks

if you are going to change the bearing, you mine as well change the whole asm. if you do not you could end up having no clutch after driving about 20 miles because the bearing can actually bind up on the old cylinder like what happened to my 87 bronco II. i ended up taking the trans out 3 times before we figured out what it was. i hope this info helps. good luck.

to replace the throw out bearing, you have to drop the transmission. if you are gonna pull the trans, replace the slave cylinder too. what kind of mechanical abilities do you have? and how was that diagnosis made? it would be a big PITA to drop the trans and not have a problem with the t/o bearing.
