limited slip

Thats not true. I had a L/S on my 90 ranger and it worked great on/off road. It helped me out a lot to walk up rocks in dry & wet grass. but a couple times i did see that it wasnt working well in watery mud. See Pics

It would walk up that rock like it was nothing!!!!!!! I tryed it with my 79 & 83 toyota 4x4's with 4in lifts on 33's and they would just break lose in the rear. same when i tryed doing it with one of my lifted jeeps. But as you see in the first pic is has the one tire spin. but other times in the mud it worked great.

I also had one under my 93 ranger and it was hard to get just one tire to to spin. they both seemed to be turning all the time. the one under the 93 was a F7, dont know what the 90 was.

I just have a 2wd but I love the torsen in it. I can go almost anywhere in the winter even with 2ft of snow on the road.

It makes launching boats easier than using other peoples full size trucks that have open diffs. On rough logging roads near my cottage (some up to 35 deg slope) it powers right up them.

Not a fan. I had one. It helped slightly I am sure but not enough to notice. I have a locker now so even when one wheel is in the air, it still goes. (unlike with a L/S)

After 100k consider a clutch type l/s differential open, it may still have some bite left in the clutches but it isn't as strong as it used to be.

I am doing a performance rebuild on mine so it is going to be tighter than the average limited slip.

L/S is alright for highway use, but for offroading, there is no substitute for a locker (except maybe a spool)... :icon_thumby:

hick

I have a L/S in my Ranger. I installed new clutches last year and then this spring I took them out and installed about 0.080" worth of shims, re-installed the clutches with no friction modifier. Made a big differance. Anytime I get into the soft stuff, both rear wheels are turning. Even when I got stuck in my avitar, both were spinning, and the right rear was buried. It chatters like a b*tch around corners but works.

Still not anywhere as effective as a locker but does the trick as long as both wheels are on the ground.

A selectable locker, used sparingly, is by far the best solution. But it's expensive.

An automatic locker has some possibly unexpected road characteristics and can unexpectedly break things under some conditions, easier than an LS or open diff.

An LS is a compromise. It gives some offroad assistance, highly significant slippery-pavement assistance, and doesn't increase breakage or behave quite as badly on the road.

All mechanical traction aids trade-off handling for traction. Not all by the same amount.

LS is Ok . If it is what you have, run with it and be happy. If you are doing any serious offroad, you will find out it's limitations pretty quickly. If you are only an occasional offroader, LS is better than open.

Give it a year... it'll be back to open.

i have a LS and its fun to spin donuts , or get bent at a intersection when its wet out but when im wheeling i could deffinetly use a locker, but it gets me every were i want to go, just got to try harder.

After having a locker, the limited slip leaves something to be desired.

i really dont see how you're getting .080 extra shims pus the cluthes in there. there just isnt enough room. the reaon it chattering is cause you have it too tight. if you havent already, you will begin breaking tabs off the clutches and you will have the baddest one wheeler around
