1996 Ford Ranger 4.0l 4x4 Extended Cab
So, after I replaced the pilot bearing, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and slave cylinder, I start up my truck and notice a light scratching noise coming from the transmission area.
I didn't replace the flywheel cause it looked great. I didn't really need to touch the clutch either actually everything was in good condition but I didn't want to pull the trans off again anytime soon
So through searching this and other forums i've come up with mixed results and I was looking for some clarity.
3 possible causes of this metal on metal whirling scratching noise seem to be, throwout bearing, Input Shaft Bearing, and pilot bearing.
I'm pretty sure its NOT the throwout bearing.
When I push in the clutch pedal the noise goes away and it's total silence
On most forums the next target is the input shaft bearing.
This seems to be what it is because the noise is present in neutral at idle. The second I push the pedal in it goes away. Noise is also present when decelerating while in gear, i can hear it if i'm going slow. Also when the trans was out I notice a little play in the input shaft itself.
On ranger forums specifically the pilot bearing is brought up a lot as causing something like this kind of noise.
What exactly does a bad pilot bearing sound like?
As far as performance I'm experiencing no issues. I drove the car about 20 miles in stop and go traffic and had nothing but smooth shifts and good acceleration.
I've come to the realization that i'm going to need to pull the trans again
but im looking to see what kind job its going to be before I start.
