honestly I'd snatch the setup off the top of a 1st gen explorer..
take the flat bars that run front to rear, shorten them, mount them

then use one of the luggage bars as a light bar, that way if you way to rig up a roof basket, you can just make it slide in the flat bars and it's removable. not sure that makes sense or not... lol.

your plan of the old school metal ones would work to if you want to just mount it and call it a day. with my plan only the flat bars (front to rear) are mounted to the truck and not removable.

aright first gen explorer... thanks man, appreciate it

somebody makes a light rack that mounts to the drip rails. i dont remember who or where to get one but i do remember they were relatively inexpensive. anybody know the ones im talking about?

Yea, I had them before. I see them on Ebay all the time. Check there.

Opps, forgot to post a photo. Here is my 83 Ranger with the roof light rack. Easy to install. Aluminum material and they last forever.

A friend of mine did that on his '03 F-150 (only off an Expedition) to carry his and his wifes kayaks.

Really makes you wonder why it wasn't an option, they worked great. It made his Supercrew look like a really big SportTrac. :icon_thumby:

I love the light behind the grill are thy effective at all?

Yes. Those were 150 watts. Really helped out in the dark places.

Can I get some photos on your setup, I might do what with my truck it depends on if the grill guard gets in the way.
How did you do your switches too, I am trying to get some ideas for a clean switch setup too.
