I am replacing a cracked head on my 4.0. I had a cold start lifter tick and would like to check my lifters. Does anyone know a procedure to test them? The engine is a Jasper replacement engine with only 15,000 miles and very clean. Thanks

There are several videos on youtube on how to take apart the standard type lifter. I would assume that would apply to your 4.0 lifters also. You need to also check for wear on the roller tip, and check your rocker arms, which are a known problem with these engines. Apparently the rocker system always had poor oiling on the 2.8/2.9/4.0 type engines.

If they look good and you reuse them, make sure they go back in the same holes they came out of. If any are visibly worn or if the crown is gone, it needs a cam as well as lifters.
