Lifter tick

Proper rocker arm adjustment

Fordguy_07,

hello. while the use of the most appropriate lubricants for you environment is always correct the noise associated with the ford 2.9 liter efi 60º v6 is adjustble, dispite what the manual suggests.

this prochedure is touchy but i have performed it successfully and gone from the alledged incurable noise to the symphony like sound of a well adjusted, well tuned power plant.

i do not want to misquote myself so i shall refer to a write up by myself in this forum, several years ago. i had rebuilt my bronco iis 2.9, balanced bottom end, port and polished heads flow benched to the intake manifolds with multi angle performance valve work. i used increased rate rockers and a custom ground cam, upon completion i had lifter noise. i had to adjust the rockers 3x but it was worth it.

the 1st adjustment was close, the 2nd was on and the 3rd was just to make sure i had it all torqued nice and spanky.

see if you can search out my write up, i thought it was in the 2.9 stickies but could not locate it last night.

if worst comes to worst, i am rebuilding my 87 rangers 2.9 and will be adjust the rockers soon. when i do, if the old write up has gone amuck i will rewrite it .

If you find that write up you did please share. My 88 B2's rattling isn't getting any better. Sometimes its not too bad, other times its terrible. I put some tranny fluid in the oil last week and haven't noticed any difference.

5W-30 is the recommended oil for the 2.9L V6. However in hotter climates I'd think the 10W-30 would be better.

I'm going to try what someone else mentioned and put some ATF in the oil next time I have to add oil and see if that helps...although mine burns a bit of oil so may not be a good idea in my case.

Sounds to me like these engines are just notorious for oil not getting to places it should.

Most 2.9 tick because they eat cam bearings. The oil follows the least path of resistance. If I were you, I would put a real oil pressure gauge on and as long as it is above 5 psi at idle don't worry about it. The lifters are ticking because there is not enough oil pressure going to the lifters. Free floating rockers might help some but While you have the rockers out make sure the passages are clean. One other thing that causes oiling problems is that the screen in the oil pickup get full of gunk. The reason atf helps is that is cleans the varnish out of the oil passages. I run seafoam in the block, trans and I pull the vacuum booster line off and dump some in there when it is running.

I have a 3 gauge set I need to get installed that has the oil pressure gauge in it, just haven't had time to do anything then winter hit hard this year so there was not working outside at all. Now that the weather is getting better and hopefully start having a weekend off occasionally I can start doing some of these things. I still have a radiator sitting in the dining room that needs installed but no point in doing that until I can get the new fan clutch, hoses, belts, and thermostat. Just the little things that I really need to get done just no time lately. I haven't tried the seafoam in the crankcase, I've use it through the brake booster vacuum line on other vehicles in the past and it works great.

I plan on just running this engine until it dies then finding another 2.9 and putting in or getting a reman. engine and swapping in. For what I have the B2 for I don't want a different engine, the 2.9 does just fine and gives descent fuel economy.

I have some parts left on my donor truck, let me know what you need and if I have you pay shipping and it yours. My truck has been in the driveway for almost 2 years. Motor resealed new exhaust motor mounts. New clutch, flywheel. Transfer case and trans resealed. New brakes up front. Parts for rear brakes in thej next two days. Rebuilt interior, gauges, tach. A bunch more stuff that I am forgetting. Would have started a build thread but did not think I would do so much.
