Changed oil, spark plugs and wires. Started the truck and oil went everywhere. Shut it off right away. Found the oil leaking from the new filter. Removed the filter and found that the old gasket was still on it. Removed that gasket, put the filter back on. Refilled the oil and now when I start it I have a lifter that rattles all the time and very loud. HELP

Not sure what brand it is. Just got it from the local parts place. It isnt a name brand. Why would that matter?

Ford 2.9's & Fram oil filters don't work well together. Fram filters will resrict your oil flow causing it to tick & rattle.

These engines are just known to tick like crazy. Some do it, some doing. For instance, mine is very quiet after a new oil change....1000 miles in, its ticking again. My friends old 2.9, ticked like no tomorrow.

Do a search under the 2.9 forum to see how common it is. Its considered fairly normal.

BUT, if it does not sound normal, like you've noticed a change in how loud those lifters are getting, check your oil pressure.

One of my 2.9's started rattling like that. It was really loud on start-up. I did the Seafoam-in-oil treatment and it hasn't really ticked/rattled since.

Maybe I didnt explain well enough. It had the normal 2.9 lifter tick. But, after the problem with the filter it is much loader and all the time. Used to be after a few seconds, oil would get to the top of the motor and the tick would quiet down. Now it never quiets down.

Put a good filter (Motorcraft), and the right oil (5W-30) in it and it should be fine.

Im using the same oil I always have 10w30 and have never had a problem with it. I have never had a filter give me a problem like this either.

Try the seafoam. A few seconds of oil leaking shouldn't have caused problems. If anything (and I am guessing here), the leak would have caused a loss of pressure and perhaps a lifter lost its prime. Try the seafoam. It may clear out the oil passages and journals enough to get the lifter "re-oiled".

Then again, I may have just blown a big cloud of smoke out my ass and am not even close to helping you.

Either way, cleaning the engine out can't hurt any.
